PROVIDENCE --

The top Republican in the Rhode Island House of Representatives has lost his leadership position after his a recent arrest in Connecticut on charges of drunken driving and marijuana possession.

Republican lawmakers on Tuesday picked Rep. Brian Newberry to replace Rep. Robert Watson as minority leader.

Watson was arrested last month after failing sobriety tests at a police checkpoint. East Haven, Conn., police said they found suspected marijuana in his pocket. Watson said he wasn't drunk and that he uses pot to treat pain related to pancreatitis.

1. Kick the dog while he's down... typical Republicans
Of course, he deserves to lose his job completely for being a hypocrite.

2. So Even Though He's a Republican "Leader."
If he uses marijuana for medical reasons that is okay IMHO. He shouldn't be driving under the influence though.

I'm also disappointed in the AP and East Haven police. You found "suspected marijuana?" What did you suspect about it? Use a few more words and say you found a substance you suspect may be marijuana. Space on the Interwebs is pretty cheap these days. You can afford it.
