US feared Pakistan might 'alert' Bin Laden about raid:CIA
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON — CIA Director Leon Panetta said in an interview Tuesday that officials ruled out informing Islamabad about a planned raid against Osama bin Laden's compound as they feared their Pakistani counterparts might alert the Al-Qaeda chief.

Panetta told Time magazine that "it was decided that any effort to work with the Pakistanis could jeopardize the mission: They might alert the targets."

For years Pakistan's government denied suspicions that Bin Laden was hiding inside its borders, but a US assault force found him a mere 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the Pakistani capital living near a military academy.

The operation has highlighted tensions between Washington and Islamabad, with Pakistan's foreign ministry on Tuesday criticizing the "unauthorized unilateral" raid.

1. This, I believe.
Had we made our intentions known, I have no doubt that we'd have had another near miss. I wonder how the dynamics are going to play out in Pakistan, internally. If the government honestly was clueless about OBL's whereabouts, than the ISI is going to get a beatdown. If there's no major changes, then maybe the government wasn't so clueless after all.

2. I honestly think the Pakistani Civilian Government...
is powerless when it comes to controlling the ISI...Of course I could be wrong but it sure seems that way.

3. You are absolutely correct ..
Which is why we must work to defund the Pakistani military. They don't need such a large military.

Pakistan needs to be brought to the realization that it is a small country, can never compete with India and should give up its aspirations of invading and conquering India like the central asian thugs like Gaznavi, Ghauri and Babur did in the 12th century.

It is that long term aspiration of conquering India is what drives Pakistan and has always driven Pakistan.

The Taliban & other extremist to go unchallenged in their country for so long as well. All the attention has been on India.

5. I have to say...Our President has HUGE AMERICAN BRASS BALLS!
He did exactly what he said he would do back in 2008! If he got the intel that Osama was in Pakistan he would get him! And SENATOR Obama was criticized by almost everyone especially those on the Right as being naive & clueless! LOL!
