U.S. seeks to reassure key ally Bahrain on Iraq

MANAMA, April 13 (Reuters) - The United States' top military officer on Tuesday sought to reassure Bahrain of Washington's commitment to prevent Iraq from breaking apart and accused Syria and Iran of meddling in Iraq.

Air Force General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa and other officials amid increasing violence in Iraq. snip

Asked during the news conference about plans for a U.S. military presence in the Gulf, Myers said:

"We think our presence in the Gulf has a stabilising influence. And so there will probably be some presence. I can't tell you what the character of that presence is. And also I can tell you that we don't want to be anywhere where we're not wanted."
