'Acting governor pay' adds up during Barbour travels
Source: Clarion Ledger

Gov. Haley Barbour spent half of 2010 traveling outside of Mississippi, but he is "doing his job" and always reachable even when he's gone, as a spokeswoman recently put it.

Still every time Barbour crosses the state line, Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, by law, gets an extra $7.50 an hour to fill in for him.

In the last three years, Bryant has received a $50,000 salary bump because of Barbour's penchant for travel. Bryant's annual salary is $60,000.

. . .

Barbour and his bodyguards racked up $300,000 in out-of-state travel expenses in 2010, according to documents obtained by The Clarion-Ledger. His staff says Barbour's traveling priority is promoting economic development, though some of those trips coincided with political events. But again, staff maintained he was always available.

3. Good gig for Lt. Gov. to get the extra $50K too
Former MN Gov. Tim Pawlenty did the same...was always out of state running for McCain's VP slot and then 2012 President.

Agree that both states are better without these jerks, but it's wrong for them to get paid and spend so much, burdening the states. Pawlenty left MN with a projected $6.2 BILLION deficit (which was later found to be $5.2 BILLION earlier this year).

4. I guess that 1% in the presidential polls must have disappointed Barbour
After all the time and money spent trying whip up support for a campaign. Of course, Mississippi has tons of reserve cash these days and can certainly afford to fork it over for a stand-in now & then. And they've known all along you're a lobbyist at heart and all, so what the heck?

7. $7.50 an hour is laughable
unless, as I am sure is the case, it is 24 hours a day while Barbour is away. Then you get time-and-a-half and you are on double time pay before 2 days are over...I am Union. I wonder how Lt. Gov. Bryant's contract reads?

Labor law states that as an hourly employee, you are only allowed to "work" so many hours in a roll before you are required to take a day(?) off.
Many contracts read that after 8 hours, you are on time-and-a-half, and after 10 hours you are on double-time pay.

IDK, I just wonder how these anti-Union thieves do it. I agree, if you have a "job" that pays $60,000.00 a year before perks and graft and you "earn" an extra $50,000.00 a year, before perks, graft and benefits, that is pretty damned good.

Honestly though, I think we all know that his actual compensation far exceeds what his official pay is.

Like the Mayor of N.Y. (I think) is only "paid" $1.00 a year.....but they sure seem to prosper handsomely from that official salary. It seems that (at least) the minimum wage laws would be in effect for those poor, underpaid, civil servants.

In most large cities, people would actually pay to be on the city council or the mayor. They have direct knowledge of the future plans of the city besides the direction (and contracts) that they steer the city in. This allows them to purchase property (for instance) and sell it to the city at a huge profit because of their knowledge of the future plans for the city. I see it happen all the time and I am just an average citizen with no political ties.

It sure reminds me of Russia before and after "the wall" came down. They must have been closet capitalists?

9. I should think Barbour should be docked $7.50 an hour when he's
out of the state. He may be "available", but he's not within state lines, so who does the state answer to, Barbour or Bryant?
