US soldier killed in attack north of Baghdad
A US soldier was killed and three others injured in a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack north of Baghdad, the US military said.

"One 4th Division Infantry soldier was killed and three injured at approximately 10:30 pm on August 1 when their convoy came under an RPG attack south of Shumayat," a town between Balad and Tikrit around 100 kilometres north of Baghdad, a spokesman said.

Since US President George W Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, the US-led coalition says 53 US soldiers have been killed in guerrilla attacks, while at least 56 have died in non-combat incidents

2. Wolfowitz says combat deaths will not deter Americans from supporting Iraq
The Pentagon's second-ranking official said Sunday he does not believe a mounting U.S. military death toll will erode Americans' support for restoring stability to Iraq.

"Iraq now is the central battle in the war on terrorism" and is vital for the safety of the United States, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said on "Fox News Sunday."

4. F*ck Wolfoditz too.
Has this chickenlittlehawk been right about anything?

Our soldiers are currently dying at better than a one-a-day clip, they weren't dying at a one-a-day clip a year ago.

We're creating terrorists where previously there were none.

More people hate America now than at any point in our nations history.

And it keeps getting worse.

:grr:  :grr:

I hate all of these bastards so very very much.

3. Updated info. on this killing
US soldier killed, 3 wounded in ambush in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug. 2 — A U.S. soldier was killed and three wounded overnight in a rocket-propelled grenade attack on their convoy north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The attack on the 4th Infantry Division convoy brings to 53 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in hostile action in Iraq since U.S. President George W. Bush declared major combat over on May 1.

The United States says die-hard Saddam Hussein loyalists and some foreign fighters are behind the guerrilla campaign.

Soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division also swooped on a house in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit overnight and seized a man suspected of organising attacks, in the latest of a series of raids that U.S. officers say are closing in on Saddam himself.

Backed by helicopters, the U.S. troops met no obvious resistance as they took the middle-aged, unidentified man into custody, blindfolded and handcuffed. (snip/...)

12. HE PROBABLY HAD A BAG ON HIS HEAD
Has anybody but me noticed how the Waffen SS over there, write on someones neck with indelible magic marker.

And then put a bag on their heads. It have seen countless pictures of the Waffan laughing while they do this. Are these people idiots??? Do they have no shame.

This is not anyway to convince the bystanders you are operating with any kind of justice or respect. What if your "informant" is settling a personal grudge and the DETAINEE is really innocent???

What idiots--What are their commanders thinking of????

19. Thanks for pointing out the odd practice of writing on their necks
I haven't been that observant yet, but I DID see them laughing in a photo while working on a man with a bag on his head.

It looked dehumanizing, to grossly understate it. The citizens they are meeting have so little to do with 9-11.

5. "Bring it on"
How about offering another reward for another publicly insulted Iraqi body. Things are not looking good. How much of this was brought on by the tape of Hussein saying that his sons fought bravely, how much by his daughters saying his confidants sold him out?

11. Is it normal to move convoys at night?
Sounds needlessly dangerous. Patrols at night, I've heard about but not convoys.

14. "Blood remains on the hands"
Remember the column by Jimmy Breslin of that title, published shortly after the outbreak of war? News this morning of more blood shed reminded me of it. It's worth reading, and reading again:

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0331-11.htm

"In Washington, Rumsfeld stares at the red splotches on both his hands and Colin Powell calls out that there must be something wrong with the soap because it does not get the blood off his hands.

"At Camp David, Bush notices blood on his right hand and he goes to the bathroom to wash it off and he holds his hands under the water and rubs them with a bar of soap and then puts them under the water and he takes them out and holds them out to dry with a towel. He glances at his hands and sees the blood of the dead baby is bright on his fingers. He mutters and washes the hands again.

"He will do it again. Again this year and then next year and through all the years because the blood remains forever on the hands."

15. The non-combat death number is suspicious.
56 'non-combat' deaths? As opposed to 53 combat deaths? SO, since May 1, we have lost more soldiers to accidents than to combat?

Ya gotta be kidding me. If the army loses 56 soldiers in a year during peacetime to accidents, it makes the papers.

This is to spin what a tornado is to a breeze.

16. the CNN reporter showing choppers over Tikrit could've
seen the oil fire 10 kliks away in Baiji Refinery.

But not newsworthy-except the price of crude jumped
$1.70 to $32.31/bbl at COMEX.

18. just turn the camera 90degrees and we could've seen realnews
And we should be paying way more attention to
hospital in Mozdok being truck bombed.

I keep thinking of the soldier in Platoon,
sticking a knife in his leg so he could come home.
