US issues rebuke of Australia's opposition leader
AP , SYDNEY
Tuesday, Apr 13, 2004,Page 5

The US State Department has criticized Australian opposition leader Mark Latham for saying Australia's alliance with the US was not an equal partnership, news reports said yesterday.

The rebuke was an unusual move for Washington, which seldom comments on domestic Australian politics. The Sydney Morning Herald said officials deliberated for several days before deciding to react to Latham's comments made last week.

"The alliance between Australia and the United States is a partnership of equals in principle and in reality," the Herald quoted an unidentified State Department official as saying. "Characterizations to the contrary are neither well informed nor well based."

2. Hi AussieInCa
Welcome to DU :-)

I thought, like you said, the US State Dept can STFU, and guess what, thats pretty much what Latham said too.

As I've said before, and I'll say it again, fuck the alliance, we can sort that out with President Kerry.

8. g'day Eureka
nice too meet you mate. To me it is just another example of Bushco's arrogant, moral superiority attitude to foreign countries that don't follow them like sheep.

yep, state dept. stfu and get a wooly sheep up you.

3. This will backfire... and is a ludicrous lie.
Never has this relationship been "equal." Australia is and has been a junior partner in the US-led Western bloc for decades. To suggest otherwise is believed by almost no one. Australians are growing tired both of the bellicose US government and its local proxy at home. Hopefully they will vote for national sovereignty and for Labor.

4. The * administration can STFU
Who the hell are they to interfere in our domestic politics?

Imagine the screams if Australia was to interfere in US party politics.

Partnership of equals my arse.

Here's to a Labour victory in the coming election :toast:

5. Let's hear the Australian ambassador tell Congress
that the U.S. will have to supply troops for the front lines of Australia's next war of opportunity, eh?

7. Dang! is this one straight out of the propaganda hopper?
I clicked into the link found out, like, I was the second viewer :scared:

(snip)
Latham's office did not immediately return calls yesterday. But he told the Herald: "I will always maintain that Australia should be an equal partner in the alliance, I'm glad the official from the State Department agrees."

Mortadelo and the WTC Attack

In Mortadelo y Filemon, El 35 anniversario, the final image of the title story contains a detail which suggests that author Fransisco Ibáñez may have foreseen the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center buildings in New York. The image was drawn in 1992. This book was published in July 1994.

We thank Ramon Martinez Cazon for pointing us to this detail!

9. Its not as if Lathan
has been critical of the alliance per se. He is critical of the war, of Bush (esp before his rise to opposition leader) and is promising to withdraw Australian troops from Iraq should Labor win government.

He hasn't threatened to close Pine Gap or NW Cape. This criticism of Latham is payback from Bush for little Johnny's unwaivering support of everything Bush has done.

10. They cannot forgive Latham's description of ....
... PM little johnnie howard's party as a "Conga line of suck-holes."

I believe the Murkin Ambassador here called on little johnnie and expressed his dismay at some other perceived slight by the Labour Opposition. Talk about interference in local politics!

I think that when Latham becomes PM, he should instruct our Ambassador in Washington to call on President Appalling Snafu and tell him he needs to set up a national health care system, reverse his tax cuts and subsidise pharmaceutical costs for everybody.

11. Howards screaming like a stuck pig about Latham, but still
won't apologise for misleading the Australian people over WMD.

I live in his electorate and he sent a glossy brochure describing all sorts of evil weapons Saddam had.
I wrote to his office about them and they replied confirming they existed.

I've written since asking for an explanation..no replies.

Time for Howard to retire and join the board of Carlyle.

15. G'day, dbt
Sure is! I guess we take a great interest in what is going on in the States because our future is so tied to it, especially with the little schmuck Howard in power (not for much longer, but). Are there plenty people in Aus barracking (that's 'rooting' to you guys, which means a totally different thing in Aus...) for Kerry to win right now! You better believe it!

It puts my faith back in America when I come to sites like this. You guys rock!
