Dozens gather at Dearborn peace vigil

Several dozen people are huddled in the pouring rain at a peace rally this afternoon to serve as an antidote to Quran-burning Pastor Terry Jones' planned demonstration of the Islamic Center of America.

Many wore overcoats and carried umbrellas as they gathered at the Henry Ford Centennial Library for the rally scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Imad Hamad, regional director American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said the event was organized to draw people away from the Islamic Center on Ford Road to head off possible confrontations between Jones and supporters.

"He has 24-hour coverage, and many media outlets covering Jones' visit. He's live all the time. He couldn't buy this kind of coverage," Hamad said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., proceedings were delayed until U.S. Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, appears. He is among the scheduled guests, as well as Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and Dearborn Mayor John B. "Jack" O'Reilly Jr.
