Experts see drawbacks to Republican convention in NY
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N12506632.htm

NEW YORK, April 12 (Reuters) - The Republican Party's hope that its convention in New York would highlight a nation healed after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks could backfire as the White House comes under fire for its handling of the crisis and the war in Iraq, strategists said on Monday.

President George W. Bush's re-election effort is plagued with questions on whether his administration could have prevented the attacks, and holding his party's convention just minutes away from the World Trade Center, where nearly 3,000 people were killed, could make matters worse, they said.

"It was the wrong place to go from the beginning," veteran Republican political consultant Roger Stone said.

"They wanted to highlight the president's strong leadership in the days after 9/11, which includes the conduct of the war, and now that is going to be a contentious, hard-fought issue," he said, adding that, "The backdrop here has the potential to dominate the story."

2. You don't need an expert to figure that out. But the GOP may need one

to figure out WHERE they might be welcome. So many across the country have lost family members and friends because of these dickheads.

This little problem for the GOP is a testiment to how quickly things have changed and the country has turned since their initial plans.

They say it's good for the economy... But is Bermuda "extradition-friendly" enough for these criminals?

31. How about India - where they've helped to send most of the jobs -
since, after all, their guys have been saying outsourcing is so good for America.

Or how 'bout the Grand Caymans? Just like Bermuda, all the super-rich delegates could go visit their corporate shelter P.O. boxes while they're in the neighborhood.

5. hoist on their own petard
Word History: The French used pétard, “a loud discharge of intestinal gas,” for a kind of infernal engine for blasting through the gates of a city. “To be hoist by one's own petard,” a now proverbial phrase apparently originating with Shakespeare's Hamlet (around 1604) not long after the word entered English (around 1598), means “to blow oneself up with one's own bomb, be undone by one's own devices.” The French noun pet, “fart,” developed regularly from the Latin noun pditum, from the Indo-European root *pezd-, “fart.”

Hamlet: Act III, scene IV

    And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For 'tis the sport to have the engineer
    Hoist with his own petard

7. The wheels are looking kinda wobbly on that wagon.
Consider, first, the demands the Republican party has issued for New York's transit system, post offices and street traffic flow. I thought this would be enough that not even Zarathustra himself could lend the Republican convention any more dignity than a Little Rascals parade.

Now we have a sham president looking to exploit hallowed ground for a shameless political theatre after the world has learned that the entire tragedy could have well been prevented. History will not send these vermin to the rubbish heap soon enough.

Look for the bushies to make up some excuse like they can't guarantee security, then choose Casper, Wyoming or Fort Wayne, Indiana for their alternate convention site.

17. Make it so.
I notice the government is suddenly unclutching some of the medical money for the Ground Zero rescuers. What they did for us, they should never have to pay a doctor's bill again. Ever. For anything. God bless them forever.

16. Hubris
is what has brought them to this point....they were going to gloat in NYC..they were going to have their convention in what they once considered a liberal stronghold...and they were going to twist this national tragedy to their benefit.... and now they are watching as their plans go awry....

to leave NYC now and pick another city would mean defeat....

to go to NYC means possibly facing angry mobs.....

it will be interesting to see what happens.

And it still won't be as hot as Iraq.

BROTHERS IN ARMS — 1985
TITLE — RIDE ACROSS THE RIVER
LYRICS —

I’m a soldier of freedom in the army of man
We are the chosen, we’re the partisan
The cause it is noble and the cause it is just
We are ready to pay with our lives if we must

Gonna ride across the river deep and wide
Ride across the river to the other side

I’m a soldier of fortune, I’m a dog of war

20. "Drawbacks" is a classic understatement ... like Jim Lovell's (Apollo 13):
Houston, we have a problem.

Bwaa-haa-haa. No. Actually: boo-hoo-hoo. NYC could be Chicago '68 redux. As much as Chicago hurt the Democrats (Humphrey vs Nixon), I don't want to go through that again (even if it means hurting the Repukes).

40. Help me out here
I thought they were not using it as a political tool. Maybe I "misunderestimated" what they were trying to do here, but I thought they said that they would not politicize 9/11. This article is saying that they are trying to take advantage of it for political gain. Imagine if Roosevelt, for no political gain, had the Dem Natl Convention at Pearl Harbor in '44?

Show resolve. New York is calling. And don't forget to stand at Ground Zero with a fake fireman (like the ones in your commercial, since I don't think any real ones will be eager to let your put your arm around their shoulders this time).

That should be priceless.

I think I'll be serving pretzels during this show.
