John Boehner: DOJ Funds Should Pay To Defend Marriage
04/18/11 03:02 PM ET

WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner says the Justice Department should reimburse the House for court costs of defending a ban on gay marriage.

In a letter Monday to Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, the Ohio Republican says he shares her concern over the cost of defending the law in court and intends to "redirect" some of the department's money to the House as repayment. Boehner, who is traveling in Pakistan, does not say how much money is at issue or how he would force the department to repay the House.

In February, President Barack Obama instructed the Department of Justice not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court. A special House panel voted along partisan lines to take up that responsibility. Proponents of gay marriage say the law is discriminatory.

1. I think those House members who supported this action, should pay for all of it. Got that GOP?

14. That's what I'd like to know. Among my friends in my generation, the couple I
know that's been together the longest is gay. I've gotten some advice from them that's helped me with my marriage.

4. WTF is this asshole doing in fucking Pakistan?
What in Koresh could he possibly be doing in that country?
Do they have a golf course there?
Did he bring his sticks?

I really hope he's quoted saying something disparaging about the President on record.
I'm sick of this pickled prick.

6. When Caribou Barbie criticized the President...
while in India, it was nearly completely ignored by the M$M, and I don't recall anyone calling her out on it other than here at DU and at other left leaning websites. I suspect the Orange Man would get the same free pass.

9. Probably conferring with the Taliban. You know, brainstorming and what now.
Getting some ideas on how the Taliban was so successful passing the laws to oppress women, homosexuals etc.

5. Would be a violation of the Constitution to defend it.
Separation of Church and State.

Idiots say that it is a sacred institution meaning that it is religious.

7. Defend marriage, you jerks?
You CANNOT defend marriage. Personally, I think the institution of marriage was dead and buried DECADES ago from STRAIGHT couples.

Leave people alone to decide how they want to live their lives; straight OR gay.

8. He'd sure do better to defend marriage by getting after the
corporations to forego the seductions of outsourcing (Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for next to free) and corporate marriages that reduce competition and cause redundancy of a trained workforce, consisting of every variety of sexual orientation, and the banks from making fraudulant financial vehicles that hide their duplicity and inhibit the general welfare of whole communities, some of which even have, you guessed it, married folks. Marriage, a small, legal incorporation of ANY two individuals and younger/older dependents, nothing religious about it, still requires jobs and programs that support family life (w/ and w/o children) and bills that provide a stronger social safety net for times when it's worse, or when there is sickness. God forbid its both those at the same time! As for forsaking all others, the GOP has not a shred of credibility. No one need be "alone" should they desire otherwise, and that's key, DESIRE, to be otherwise. It's what makes life lived over merely existence by and for oneself.

12. IS PELOSI SIDING WITH BOEHNER ON THIS?
If so, I sure hope DU attacks her like they do President Obama for every little thing he does & many things they say he will do but still has not.

This will be interesting to see because so far DU as a whole has been very hypocritical when it comes to the so-called excuse of "We should criticize our leaders"!!

Pelosi & Kucinich both voted for Health Care Law & nothing was said about either one of them.

Pelosi allowed the vote on the Tax Compromise to take place when she alone could have prevented it...NOTHING was said.

This is a huge Progressive Value & if Pelosi sides with Boehner then I would hope the Greatest Thread Page should be filled with the over the top hyperbolic vitriol that has been thrown at President Obama on countless occasions!

13. House, D of J, doesn't matter. It's all TAXPAYER money. Stop spending it on this.
ludicrous that he expects the D of J to pay for taking a position the President said is unwinnable (and therefore a waste of taxpayer money), but that is beside the point.

It's all OUR money. Where's the Taxed Enough Already Party on this?
