Afghan government releases Taliban fighters Pakistan says are innocent

Nine Pakistani men jailed in Afghanistan for spying and helping the Taliban during the war with the US were released from prison, in a goodwill gesture towards Pakistan which claimed the nine were innocent.

The prisoners were released by President Hamid Karzai following a request by the Pakistan government and had been in prison since around the time of the fall of the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban regime in late 2001.

However, Pakistan's ambassador to Afghanistan, Rustam Shah Mohmand, insisted they were all innocent.

"We think they are all innocent, we think the rest of the (Pakistani) prisoners who are still in Afghan prison are all innocent... and must be released," he said.

The prisoners were Monday loaded into a pick-up truck and taken to Pakistan's embassy in Kabul as an embassy official tried to prevent them from speaking further with journalists.
