NAJAF, Iraq (AFP) - Police deployed in the central Shiite Muslim holy city of Najaf following an agreement, involving the US-led coalition, for the withdrawal of armed militiamen from the streets, police said.

"An agreement has been reached between the coalition and the office of (Shiite radical leader Moqtada) Sadr," said Najaf police chief Ali al-Yaseri.

Under the terms of the agreement, coalition troops will not enter the city, which will be under Iraqi security control, said Yaseri.
