Seattle, San Francisco air passengers may have been exposed to measles

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ATLANTA -- Passengers on four flights from Hong Kong to San Francisco and Seattle late last month may have been exposed to toddlers from China with measles, federal officials warned.

Health officials determined Friday that a total of four children - three in Washington and one in Maryland - who recently were adopted from China were confirmed to have measles, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Three of the children likely were infectious during their March 26 airplane trip to the United States, the CDC said.

The CDC's warning applies to United Airlines Flight 862 from Hong Kong to San Francisco; Cathay Pacific Flight CX872 from Hong Kong to San Francisco; United Airlines Flight 476 from San Francisco to Seattle and United Airlines Flight 784 from San Francisco to Seattle.

1. What kind of measles?
As I recall, there are different types, German measles being the nastiest. I've had them all during childhood, so I think I'd be immune. But I wouldn't wish German measles on anyone-had serious complications and was ill for about 4 months.

3. German measles, rubella,
(the R in the MMR shot) is also known as three-day measles and is generally very mild. It was probably the regular measles that left you ill for so long, or perhaps some other rash-causing disease altogether.

4. I was too little
to remember the name of the measles. My grandfather, who was an MD, cared for me. Complications included pneumonia, which may have come on because of a weakened immune system. I was sick all summer, and missed the last two weeks of first grade and the first two weeks of second grade.

7. I suspect you had regular measles(rubeola).
They're much more likely to have nasty complications, including pneumonia. Measles epidemics swept through army training camps during WWI and many young men died.

Check it out.

5. You're the exception
Back in my day (God, I feel old), we all got German measles as a matter of course. I remember it being very mild, considered more of a nuisance than a real disease. It was viewed by the kids as a pretty good thing--you didn't feel very sick and as long as you still had a rash, you were deemed too infectious to go to school.

6. It is mild
but if caught by a pregnant woman at the wrong time, will lead to birth defects or retardtion of the baby.

2. Why are these kids required to go through immunizations.. ??
I really dont' understand why the kids adopted for the U.S. aren't required to do some sort of immunization, quarantine for a few weeks before coming here. This just seems incredibly irresponsible.
