Judge on child murder case assassinated
Tuesday, 22 March 2011 10:45
Kathryn Thompson

A judge presiding over a controversial murder case has been shot on her way to a municipal court in northern Colombia, El Tiempo reported on Tuesday.

The assassination occured at 8:00AM on Tuesday in front of the headquarters of a transport carrier in the town of Saravena in the Arauca department.

Judge Gloria Costanza Gaona was in charge of the case in which the army is suspected of brutally murdering three young siblings in October 2010 just 43 miles from where Costanza was killed.

60 members of the Army's 5th Moblie Brigade were subsequently investigated for October's killings with the police taking into custody army 2nd lieutenant Raul Muñoz Linares.

~~~~~
The U.S. Government heavily funds the Colombian military each year since 2000, totaling well above 7 billion dollars already.
The Colombian military has also been known to repeatedly murder young Colombian men, then count them as murdered leftist guerrilas, thereby maintaining the image that Colombia is under heavy armed seige from political enemies. This act of murderous deceit already acquired a name long ago: "false positives".
1. One thing you forgot
The Republicans have threatened to hold back nominations unless the President signs a trade agreement with South Korea and Colombia.
So, not only will the government be funding the Colombian military, now US companies will be using the people that the army doesn't kill as low paid workers.
2. Good story...
small grammar point. Can you be repeatedly murdered? I think not.
Known to murder young......then double count or count them once as murdered civilians then again as leftist guerrillas...
7. We're already there... performing the murders.
US drones are already being used by Columbia for "counter-terrorism" operations.
Govt may fund lawyers for security forces
The government introduced a bill to provide legal defense for members of the security forces accused of crimes, El Espectador reported Wednesday.
Defense Minister Rodrigo Rivera, who introduced the initiative to the House of Representatives, said that the idea is that police and military personnel will not have to mortgage their homes and property in order to defend themselves against charges.
"Never again will a soldier have to jeopardize their children's inheritance to be able to defend themselves legally. For our military and police personnel it will guarantee adequate judicial representation in criminal and disciplinary matters" said Rivera.
When asked whether the alleged perpetrators of "false positives" or extrajudicial killings can access the legal services, Rivera said that those who have no ruling against them can access defense. However cases such as drugs and weapons trafficking, rape, and other crimes unrelated to military service will not be covered by the Public Defender for the Security Forces.
