BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iyad Allawi, a prominent member of Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim Governing Council, has stepped down as the head of the executive body's security commission, his party's newspaper said.

Baghdad daily, mouthpiece of the Iraqi National Accord, said he "renounces his mission at the head of the commission.

"The commission does not have prerogatives to find effective solutions to the deterioration of the security situation" in the country, it said.

The paper said Allawi had submitted a letter to the current Governing Council president, Massud Barzani, in which he expressed "reservations on the measures adopted by the top civil administrator (Paul Bremer) and his armed troops."

It did not elaborate and Allawi was not available for comment.

2. We were told that it was just
a small band of thugs that were causing this. What I want to know is, are 400 killed and 1,000 injured a small band of thugs? Please explain, Rummy.

5. Remember, almost all of those are civilians caught in crossfire
Those numbers are from the hospital, clinics, and field hospitals.
I've read that insurgents generally aren't taking their injured to to these places for treatment, for fear of being picked up by US forces.

6. Well then, it's no wonder that
the Governing Council is falling apart. May it continue to fall apart. I hope Paul Bremmer is left standing alone there in the middle of it all.

Iraqi interim Human Rights Minister Abdel Basit Turki has resigned, a day after the interior minister quit, senior coalition spokesman Dan Senor told a news conference.

Mr Senor did not mention the reason for the resignation of the Sunni Muslim economist.

On Thursday, interim Interior Minister Nuri Badran announced he had submitted his resignation after US overseer Paul Bremer expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of his ministry, which controls the police.

The resignations come amid widespread protests against US-led coalition offensives across the country against Shiite and Sunni insurgents.

A Sunni member of the interim Government Council, Ghazi Ajil al-Yawer, also threatened to resign if the coalition does not peacefully resolve the crisis in Fallujah, west of Baghdad, which is under siege by US Marines.

7. No Problem....
Ali-bin Bremmer is ready to step in. Also Ali-bin Sanchez is expressing willingness to step in to keep the June 30th transfer on track.

8. So wht happens if...
Come June 30th half of the Council is gone? Bush won't care because it really isn't about transfering power it is about all those political ads already in the can about what a glorius job Idiot in Chief did with the transfer of power to the Iraqies and that Iraq is on its way to Democracy.

Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 02:32 PM by daleo
A little set-back like this won't spoil Bremer's day.

on edit - Perhaps Bush is fishing for Chalabis at the ranch today.
