Social Security to loom large in Bush ’04 drive
The Hill

Reforming Social Security is almost certain to figure prominently in President Bush’s reelection campaign next year, pitting pro-privatization Republicans against Democrats worried about the ups and downs of a market-based pension system.

A source close to the president’s reelection campaign said Bush will run “big time” on revamping the Social Security system, a longstanding conservative goal.

And last month White House spokesman Ari Fleischer buttressed that remark, saying Social Security reform “remains a very important priority for the president.” ---

2. yup, seniors struggling right now, with a GUARANTEED benefit
won't be fooled by this slight of hand. Just ask them to imagine having not only their pensions and 401K's suffering the last 3 years, but also their monthly SS check subject to the whims of the market. Those not already getting back into the employment market could be pushed over the edge if their SS benefit varied with the Dow Jones.

Yeah, they'll gladly jump on the privatization bandwagon! Right....

5. bring it on
how many trillions of dollars vanished when the stock marked bubble popped? how many pension funds are going under? (the govt's pension benefit guarantee fund is stretched to the limit.)

yeah, i look forward to hearing how the republicons are going to sell the idea that social security should be turned into INsecurity.

bring it on.
