Lawsuit settled: Isthmus, AP will get emails, Walker must pay legal costs

Bill Lueders on Wednesday 03/16/2011 1:56 pm,

The office of Gov. Scott Walker has agreed to a settlement in a lawsuit brought by Isthmus newspaper and the Wisconsin Associated Press over access to emails sent to the governor in response to his "budget repair bill." The settlement requires the governor to produce the emails and pay attorney fees for the plaintiffs' costs in bringing the suit.

The settlement calls for the defendants, Gov. Scott Walker and his office, to produce a disc containing these emails next Tuesday, March 22, at or after 4 p.m. It is agreed that the governor will produce emails "in the folders in which they are stored at the time of production."
..............................As part of the settlement, the governor's office agreed to pay just over $7,000 in plantiffs' attorney fees and costs

Isthmus and the AP both made requests, under the state's Open Records Law, on Feb. 18, seeking emails that had been received by the governor's office in response to his "budget repair bill." Gov. Walker stated at his press conference on Feb. 17 that his office has gotten "over 8,000 emails" over the last few days and "the majority are telling us to stay firm, stay strong, to stand with the taxpayers."

The next day, Feb. 18, the governor said his office had now gotten 19,000 emails from state residents, with the "majority in favor" of his plan................

No doubt the Koch Bros will step up and pay it. It'll be "chump change" for them...and Walker is their chump.

8. It's gonna be a very busy weekend, typing 18,000 friendly emails.
Anyone really think that Walker will make available emails in a form that can be _verified_ to be REAL?

He's a lying skunk. He lies about everything. I do not
believe he will suddenly develop morals or a taste for
honesty.

18. sorry....... it is taxpayer money
If the state does not produce public records that are not exempt by law(which these emails are not) and they force the requsting party to go to court, the state has to pay attorney fees for the requesting party.

The Governor was told what the law was but he probably ignored legal advice. Then someone higher up out of state probably told him "you will lose the case. The longer this went on the higher and more embarrasing the the bill. " So he they go out. But this wont go unnoticed by the taxpayers. And a review of the emails will prove that he's a liar, unless he has the tech services people delete many emails. But expect that to backfire too.

This is the thing--- its impossible for the the Kock Brother types to "always" secure competent mid-low level operatives. Kind of like the mob. Not all your people will be smart which leads to things unraveling eventually. That's why I dont worry about the GOP long term. As someone said, the world always spins one direction---forward.

17. It's hard to tell with them sometimes
...one of the problems I have had with it is certain forces in Madison have created a branch of "progressives" that appear and behave remarkably similarly to the RW - in fact align themselves with them in an Orwellian twist.
