U.S. Officials Alarmed By Japanese Handling of Nuclear Crisis
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 06:38 PM by Lars77
Source: ABC

"They need to stop pulling out people—and step up with getting them back in the reactor to cool it. There is a recognition this is a suicide mission," the official said.

So the US government are now TELLING another sovereign state to send its citizens on a suicide mission.

How about coming up with some volunteers then?

This reminds me of the poor Soviet troops who were told to get on the roof of the Chernobyl reactor building to shovel uranium back down into the open reactor.

1. Yet another anonymous "Official."
Really? Why should I be paying any attention to this? Could be some desk-jockey the reporter grabbed outside of the agency. What's this "Official's" freaking name, eh? Who the fuck is this "Official?"

4. Especially unnamed ones. It's the oldest trick in the journalist's
book.

"Hey, you work here? What do you think about the ?"

Could be a desk jockey. Could be a janitor. As long as they give the reporter some usable shit, they're an "official," a "spokesperson," or a "source." Any time you see a quote from an unnamed person, give it the credibility it deserves: NONE!

7. The Secretary of State for the United State of America...
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 07:38 PM by abqmufc
in an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN that this is the worst case scenario and there is no book on how to address the worst case scenario. The head of NRC also stated the cooling pond at reactor #4 has no water.....since we know it had already been overheating it is easy to see this situation in 4 days has jumped in severity.

Is the risk something out the "Day After", for either Japan or USA? Probably not.

Does this mean complete ecological destruction to the water and land of Japan? Maybe. This based upon impacts of the Hanford Release (WA) to the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River.

Does it mean possible ecological destruction to the Pacific Ocean? Maybe. It most certainly will have a dramatic impact to the commercial fishing industry for salmon, halibut, tuna, and kelp.

The cumulative risk from airborne releases dropping into the ocean AND, more importantly, contaminated water from the plant going back out to the ocean is worse than any other nuclear accident we've seen. That being said, based on the studies of fish and animal impacted by the Hanford Nuclear facility releases in Washington state, we can demonstrate some serious impacts will be felt to human and non-human life for decades to come.

5. And those going on the suicide mission (Japanese) lived through the BOMB....
Think about it, these "older men" that CNN and others state are the workers still at the plant ("b/c they are old and will die of natural causes rather than cancer") grew up with harsh memories of nuclear bombs devastating their country.....and now this is the way they die.

I agree with your comments of sovereignty and most Americans don't recognize that. I do wish the Company would stand down if needed, and if the country of Japan needs help to ask. I fear any help will be dealing with clean up and containment of large scale water contamination.

6. I don't think we can say how Americans would handle this under the
same circumstances - 9.0 earthquake, tsunami. We have a few emergencies we have not handled so well.

12. Yes, there is a list of those who certainly ought to be anxious to volunteer.
All those shills who come on the networks and tell the world how 'safe' nuclear power is, I assume, are now jumping on planes to go help cool down these nice, safe, harmless, environmentally friendly power plants! Maybe they'll even agree to set up a little community to help tend those plants for the next couple hundred years, or however long it takes for the radioactive globs to cool down?
