Shuttle board member doubts space agency can change

 A Nobel Prize-winning member of the board investigating the space shuttle Columbia disaster says he fears NASA won’t change its culture, possibly leading to yet another accident.

 THE “SAME FAULTY reasoning” that led to the 1986 Challenger accident also led to Columbia, said Douglas Osheroff, one of the 13 board members wrapping up the report on the Columbia accident.
       “No matter how good the report looks, if we don’t do something to change the way NASA makes its decisions, I would say that we will have been whistling in the wind,” Osheroff told The Associated Press in a telephone interview this week.
       “At the moment, I’m in a state of depression,” he said from his office at Stanford University.

Lost In Translation
Edmonds says that the supervisor, in an effort to slow her down, went so far as to erase completed translations from her FBI computer after she'd left work for the day.

“The next day I would come to work, turn on my computer and the work would be gone. The translation would be gone,” she says. “Then I had to start all over again and retranslate the same document. Did The FBI Destroy Evidence?
The FBI and prosecutors ordered the destruction in 1999 of evidence from a bank robbery they once suspected linked Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to white supremacists who were threatening before McVeigh's bombing to attack the government, documents show.

The evidence included a surveillance videotape of a bank robbery by some of the supremacists that occurred in Ohio five months before the bombing. The FBI lab compared the tape to pictures of McVeigh, but concluded a match was "inconclusive," internal memos show.

FBI Agent, Turner, blew whistle on Ground Zero, 911, theft.
She says she immediately reported the problem to a federal prosecutor, then to her supervisor, and waited for him to act.

Space travel is one of the most important things to the human race....whatever it takes, whatever they need. Give it all to them.

5. Space Flight Noble but ...

The manned space flight program has really been a giant corporate welfare program for aerospace contractors. The money spent on manned space flight would be much better spent on basic space research such as miniaturization, robotics, AI, and propulsion. Let the tech. mature as it needs. Put that money into basic R&D and wait for the tech to mature. In time we will be ready. The current state of manned space flight is just a giveaway to contractors. Space shuttle program has been a huge disaster in terms of affordable space flight. The contractors are taking over NASA, decisions are made to benefit themselves, not in the interest of science. Here is one suggestion.

-Federalize the contractors and place under control of a set of universities. Corporations often are run for the financial gain of a few, I'm afraid this is what is happening to NASA. We need to get the big money people out and return control to academics.
