AMMAN (Agencies) - Former foreign minister Abdul Ilah Khatib was appointed on Monday as UN special envoy for humanitarian affairs in conflict-ridden Libya.

UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky, announcing Khatib’s appointment in New York on Sunday, said Khatib would have “urgent consultations” with Muammar Qadhafi’s government on the growing battle with rebel forces and work on the humanitarian crisis it has caused.

Nesirky said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had persuaded Qadhafi’s foreign minister to let a “humanitarian assessment” team visit Tripoli.

The United Nations has demanded “urgent” access to the rebel-held Libyan city of Misrata, which has come under attack from regime forces, and Ban has expressed growing concern over what he has called Qadhafi’s “disproportionate” use of force.
