Brega bombings to scare off militia - Gaddafi son
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Libyan government bombing raids on the eastern town of Brega were designed to scare off militia and to gain control of oil installations, Saif al-Islam, son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, told Sky News on Thursday.

"First of all the bombs (were) just to frighten them to go away," he said in an interview in his car. "Not to kill them.

1. Certainly not in support of what he says
but I don't believe anybody as got a real clue as to what exactly is going on in Libya at present other than the fact there is a revolt by part of their population the significance of which in terms of their general population is an unknown quantity.

4. It's certainly not the same organized vibe that came out of Egypt.
Peter Beaumont of The Observer is in Tripoli and this morning he reports that some people went to the defense of Brega with their kitchen knives and barbeque skewers. He also said there was some support for the regime but those people don't seem to have the numbers and so aren't coming out on the street.

It does sound very confusing and hard to read.

2. Libyan government bombing raids on Brega were a "big misunderstanding" designed to scare off rebels,
• Father-of-seven from Manchester reportedly shot dead
• Gaddafi to be investigated by ICC over crimes against humanity
• Gaddafi forces strike oil export hubs in Brega for second day
• Dmitry Medvedev warns of "civil war"

In an interview with Sky News, Saif said: "First of all the bombs (were) just to frighten them to go away. Not to kill them.

"I'm talking about the harbour and the oil refinery there. Nobody would allow the militia to control Brega. It's like allowing someone to control Rotterdam harbour in Holland.

3. Too bad those who died ran right underneath those bombs, isn't it.

5. more from his sky interview: Gaddafi's Son: 'We Did Not Bomb Libyan Town'
Gaddafi's Son: 'We Did Not Bomb Libyan Town'

In an interview with Sky's foreign forrespondent Lisa Holland, Saif al Islam admitted there had merely been attempts to "scare off" people attempting to steal oil and insisted there was no uprising.

It comes amid continuing fighting around the town, where television pictures have shown bombs being dropped.

Fears are mounting over the humanitarian crisis in the conflict torn-country and the country's leader and his sons faces a probe by the international war crimes tribunal.

Saif al Islam took Holland and a Sky News crew to a suburb of capital Tripoli, where they were given a warm reception by a small group of people chanting pro-Gaddafi slogans.

Afterwards, he told Holland: "The sound of our people is very clear and loud."
