Angel Alvarez, shot 23 times by cops, found innocent on charges he opened fire on NYPD

A man whom cops shot 23 times for allegedly firing at them walked out of court a free man Wednesday after a grand jury found him innocent.

Angel Alvarez, 24, had been behind bars on gun charges since a wild Harlem shootout that left one man dead last summer.

"It feels real good," said Alvarez, surrounded by cheering family members as he left Manhattan Criminal Court. "I'm happy. I'm alive, I'm free."

Alvarez was jailed after gunfire erupted at about 3 a.m. on Aug. 8, just as a packed block party began to break up.

from what I read of the case, it sounds like the grand jury was right. It just chaps my hide when news media says a jury found somebody "innocent". He may very well BE innocent, but juries (either grand or otherwise) don't do this. They are not empowered to. They found insufficient evidence to even indict, though.

7. At a block party, no less.

It's the most densely-populated city on the continent and a block party in that dense city. How many people could the police have killed that night if he hadn't stopped their bullets with his body? If someone does that in wartime, they get a medal. The NYPD could have killed dozens of people that day with their actions - that would have been mass murder.

8. It's bound to happen

This probably speaks more to the quality of health care in NYC than their aim. Also, if you shoot enough people that many times, eventually one of them will survive.

And it is a wild East mentality. The NYPD has a long history of this sort of thing.
