Wisconsin Democrats Demand Probe of Gov. Walker

— By Andy Kroll| Tue Mar. 1, 2011 12:17 PM PST

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin will file a formal ethics complaint this week against Wisconsin's Republican Governor Scott Walker based on comments he made in a conversation with a prankster posing as right-wing billionaire David Koch, a party spokesman tells Mother Jones.

The spokesman, Graeme Zielinski, says party officials will request a probe into statements Walker made to the fake Koch, who was really gonzo journalist and Buffalo Beast editor Ian Murphy, concerning support for Wisconsin Republican lawmakers believed to be vulnerable due to their support of Walker's bill. Here's the part of Walker's call Democrats are zeroing in on:

Walker: "After this in some of the coming days and weeks ahead, particularly in some of these more swing areas, a lot of these guys are going to need, they don’t need initially ads for them, but they’re going to need a message out. Reinforcing why this was a good thing to do for the economy, a good thing to do for the state. So to the extent that message is out over and over again is certainly a good thing."

The Wisconsin Democratic Party isn't the first group to cry foul over these remarks. Last week, a left-leaning campaign watchdog group, the Public Campaign Action Fund, said it was looking into whether Walker violated ethics or campaign finance laws in Wisconsin.

2. If these Wisconsin Dems keep showing backbone, they'll be kicked out of the national party!
Be too much of an embarrassment for the D.C. apparatchiks!

3. I'm wondering if we can clone them and just replace our national Dems with Wisconsinites.
The Cheeseheads have really shown both the party and the rank and file how to stand up and fight for what's right.

The election was in November.

Where were they then?

Better late than never is not a good way to run government.

10. Hey! Russ Feingold is free. He is teaching.
He would make a great challenger to either Walker or Obama.

5. Great. Has Ian Murphy explained why he didn't play gotcha???
He had the perfect opportunity and it would have been easy.

I am wondering why he didn't just say, "Do you think this will be the first step toward getting
rid of the unions?"

I don't think this would have tipped Walker off. I listened to the whole tape and he
is just one egotistical yapper (non-stop yapper)

9. Murphy has said that he was woefully unprepared.
He thought Walker would figure it out from the start, but the idiot was clueless.

11. Interesting. I can see that now...Walker never even acted like
there was someone else on the line...it was like a monologue. I guess that's why I don't really think Walker consciously
committed any ethics violation. He's an a dangerous a-hole, yes, but I honestly think he was and is so totally self-absorbed
he didn't even take in anything Ian said.

14. A probe?
He should be arrested immediately.

He is breaking the law by ignoring a court order to let the protesters in.

He bolted the windows shut in order to starve them out.

They are treating the people like it is a police state.

This is totally unacceptable- why isn't someone arresting Walker right now?
