Pope Urges Doctors to Protect Women From Abortion
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: February 26, 2011

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI has urged doctors to protect women from the deceptive thought that an abortion might be a solution to social or economic difficulties or health problems.

Benedict reaffirmed the Catholic Church's firm opposition to abortion in a speech Saturday to members of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Vatican's bioethics advisory board.

The pontiff argued that women are often convinced, sometimes by their own doctors, that abortion is a legitimate choice and in some cases even a therapeutic act to prevent their babies from suffering.

Saying "abortion solves nothing," he called on doctors not to give up their duty to defend the consciences of women from such "deception."

6. Whenever I run across a male pooh-poohing medical reasons for
an abortion, I always wish he could be a woman at least long enough to hear the words "You have an ectopic pregnancy."

Little lights would go on, I think.

13. Or let him go through emergency surgery for a ruptured one
If he lives through it, he might have a slightly different opinion of the whole thing.

Unfortunately, the whole area of childbirth is where men are most ignorant and like it that way. They all want to think that because it's a natural process, it's 100% safe and that medicine has made it a comfortable one.

42. He should tell doctors to protect kids from molesting priests!
But the Dope won't. Meanwhile, I see Cardinal Phony Mahoney retiring and walking away clean...that bastard even admitted he shuffled molesters from parish to parish and he had a fire sale of church properties to pay those nasty lawsuit judgements. Yet that bastard Mahoney got away with it.

38. I liked Pope John Paul II. I'm not Catholic, I'm not even religious, but I liked
Pope John Paul II. He seemed a very sincere person and very likable. I did not like everything he said, but I set that aside to still like the person.

When the pope attends med school and has a valid medical opinion, maybe then I'll listen to his medical advice on private medical matter. Maybe.

26. Why is this news? Other than that he's urging Doctors to do what he can't urge them to do?
I mean, look, this is the Pope. Of course he's going to urge everyone and their mother not to support abortions. Right? What's news worthy about this? It's status quo.

And his urging doctors in regards to this is even sillier. Either the doctor is pro-life and is already urging women away from abortions, or he's a "real" doctor and is going to consider what's best for his patient PERIOD. In which case, it doesn't matter what the Pope has to say because the Pope is not a doctor and doesn't know the fact about the woman in question, and so his opinion can't be factored into what any doctor is going to say to his/her patient.

So the whole thing is the Pope yammering to no purpose, yet again. He's preaching to the choir on one side, and gonna be ignored on the other side. I'm not sure what the point is of telling any one outside of Catholics what he has to say. Who else cares? Who else is influenced by him? Is there really a doctor out there who knows the facts about women who come to him/her on this issue gonna say, "You know, the Pope isn't a woman, never got pregnant, offers no evidence to support his thesis on abortion not solving problems, and is a bias source...but darn it, he sure has changed my mind...." ?

When the Church gets a Pope who says something really important, like "Catholics can now use birth control according to their own conscience and for whatever reason they feel is right...." then that'll be news. Right now, however, with this Pope, nothing he says is news. It's all the same-old, same-old, rehashed status-quo, a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying...nothing.

33. Pope needs to shut up or...
make an actual argument for the anti-abortion rights position. Because they all fail and all they are doing is asserting their unsubstantiated premise, something his religion has gotten very comfortable with.

If I were "pro-life" I'd have to be for the spread of any RNA based self reproducing structure, as that is what "life" implies. It doesn't imply any exclusively human or animal attributes.

41. Sorry, Your Eminence, but kiss my ass.
My doctors are right that I can't have any more kids. I cannot afford the procedure to sterilize me (and you'd tell me not to do that, anyway), and should I get married again and get pregnant again, I'd have no choice but to abort the baby, not if I want to survive and protect the two kids I have already.

Seriously, kiss my ass. Until you have walked in my shoes, Your Eminence, and until you have been able to see that even the Christ we follow did not judge those who aborted their children (legal under Jewish law up until quickening in Jesus's day), you have no right to tell me what I can or can't do with my body or tell my doctors not to follow the evidence and best medical practice.
