U.S. resumes Fallujah offensive
Coalition forces retake southern town of Kut
MSNBC News Services

Updated: 6:18 a.m. ET April 09, 2004BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. Marines briefly halted offensive operations in Fallujah on Friday, but the suspension ended after only 90 minutes, a Marine commander said, apparently after negotiations with a city delegation fell through.

Lt. Col. Brennan Byrne, commander of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, said his forces were given the go-ahead to resume offensive operations.

The halt was called at noon to allow a delegation from the city to meet with U.S. commanders, let humanitarian aid into the city and give city residents a chance to tend to their dead.

Wow, lots of ink for a 90 minute pause...

3. This is unconscionable.
The word of the United States of America means nothing now. We have become the very Rogue State that we once talked so nobly of eliminating.

How are we any different from Germany in 1939? More TV?

11. Germany`s leader was smarter than my dog. Bu$h is not.. Big
difference right there. And thousands more differences to boot. I am sure. But were are still in a quagmire and over extended militarily. And that is what cooked Hitlers goose in the long run. He had lost the war before Stalingrad. That is the truth. The GOPers want us to be the new Nazi`s. But don`t have the honesty to admit it. I don`t even speak to republicans. I`m so freaking pissed.

4. CNN Especially Bad This Morning
Not only can't we get the story of whether there is a "suspension of offensive operations," but their talking head just reported that the fuel tankers, etc. that were ambushed were a "humanitarian convoy."

I think the story behind the curtain is that we're starting to see some serious rips between what the people on the ground are facing and what the administration wants us to believe ... and the people getting shot at and being forced to kill are getting tired of it.

5. "humanitarian convoy" ???
We were taking fuel and supplies to our enemies??? I think the Marines are hunkered down and are in deep shit at this moment. They need the supplies. This is a bad scene in Fallujah.

7. Now that IS obscene.
If this is CNN's story, one can only imagine what MSNBC and Fox are passing off as the news.

It's too damned bad they are expected to lie to the public, and they do it with such relish, knowing there's no one who can stop them.

6. I feel so sorry for the people of Falluja - shiite militia or not
Heard yesterday that the marines have shut off electricity and water. And they are not allowing supplies to go in. Why doesn't the media talk about this more. If there ever were good feelings for the Americans how could there be now?

This is just heartwrenching and to hear the Bush administration call it a "bump in the road" or "disquieting"....

how many dead bodies does it take to be more than a bump in the road?

8. Didn't know they turned off their essential fuel, lights, water.
It seems there should be an international law against this. Pure evil.

9. If that's what they need to do.................
to quell the uprising, they have to do it. It's simply tactical military proceedure. These guys are doing what they have to do to protect themselves. Put yourself in their position for a moment.
I'm certainly not *for* this war, occupation or what ever you want to call it. However our Generals task is to protect our troops in any manner possible while defeating the *enemy*.
That the situation has deteriorated to this point is the fault of the policy makers (ie. Bush, Cheney etc.) not the fighting forces.
The blood of all these people is on the hands of Bush. How this son of a bitch sleeps at night amazes me. If there is a God ( you know, the one that CHOSE Bush for this period of History) he/she/it will make the rest of Bush's life a living hell.

>These guys are doing what they have to do to protect themselves.

They could protect themselves by withdrawing into a fortified base and letting the Iraqis control Fajullah.

12. Heaven forbid, let them run you out of a city and the next thing you
know they'll be running you right out of THEIR country. Then how would be be able to secure all that "black gold"?

This all sucks and we need to get out of there NOW! There is no way that there can be a hand-off in June and the UN is not about to touch this mess Shrub and his cronies have created.

Exactly what is the magical plan for June anyway? They don't have one, period. So put an end to it NOW.

14. Then the generals need to come back and tell their commander that they
can't continue relentlessly bombing the city, they are getting nowhere, and need to withdraw.

15. War crimes are always a simple military tactical procedure
that is why they are war crimes, to make them less simple.

Genocide is also a simple tactic as is ethnic cleansing

Will you remember that when they come for you?
