Islamists urge Governing Council not to be partner in "US crime" in Iraq
<< DOHA (AFP) - Leading clerics and Islamist politicians from Arab and Muslim countries called on members of Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim Governing Council Thursday to quit the US-appointed body unless US forces halt the "brutal massacres" they are perpetrating against Iraqis.

Governing Council members should "threaten to walk out of the council or suspend their membership in it, at least until the aggressive operations against Iraqis are halted ... lest they be considered partners in the crime," said the 67 figures in a statement obtained by AFP. >>

<< The "genocide" unfolding in Iraq betrays "blind hatred of Muslims," they said.

They urged Arab and Islamic governments to apply economic and political pressure to bring an end to "the American crime" and called on the international community to intervene to rein in US forces, which have been engaged in fierce fighting with Sunni and Shiite insurgents in several parts of Iraq over the past few days. >>

1. Now green Shia banners fly in square where Saddam fell
On a related story, the square in which Saddam's statue once stood, is now sealed off by US troops.

The war in Iraq has done more damage to America than a 1,000 jetliners hitting public landmarks!

Now green Shia banners fly in square where Saddam fell
By James Brandon in Baghdad
09 April 2004

Where there once was a freedom statue, which replaced Saddam Hussein's toppled bronze likeness, there now stands a monument to a country torn apart by political rivalry.

A green banner of the Shia flutters from the summit of Fardous Square's freedom statue, and from around its base posters from the Communist Party and the Iraqi Women's Movement jostle for space. Glowering portraits of Muqtada Sadr hang from the top of the sculpture. The quote on the portrait reads: "We will never accept humiliations or insults from anyone."

<snip>

US soldiers are now sealing off the square which they had come to "liberate" a year ago.
