Source: Euronews

Clashes in Tripoli between pro and anti-Gaddafi supporters have been reported as the Libyan leader battles to control his capital. Much of the city is said to be deserted as his gunmen roam the streets.

Libya protests: Gaddafi embattled by opposition gains

Reports from Libya say the area controlled by embattled leader Col Muammar Gaddafi is shrinking as the opposition consolidates its gains.

Witnesses say the capital, Tripoli, is heavily guarded by pro-Gaddafi forces, with tanks deployed in the suburbs.

Videos on the internet suggest a town 50km (30 miles) west of Tripoli has fallen to anti-government forces.

Col Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, went on television on Wednesday evening to say that everything was "normal".

“Stores and schools are open, people are working, banks are open and life is normal,” the Tripoli-based news agency cited him as saying.

Qaddafi, in power since 1969, is facing an unprecedented rebellion seeking his ouster after popular uprisings brought the reigns of Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak to end this year.
