IndystarNegotiations on a union contract for airfield workers at Indianapolis International Airport have crashed, leaving union leaders frustrated after nearly two years of talks that couldn't land a deal.
Airport Chief Executive John D. Clark III said the airport's budget just can't afford union contracts at this time, so he's stopped the negotiations with the International Association of Operating Engineers.
Clark said money is too tight and airports are struggling to hold down the fees they must charge airlines.
Meanwhile, the unions said improvements to working conditions are more important to them than big pay increases, and a collective agreement was close.
