US Rights Group Eyes George W. Bush’s Canada Visit
Source: the epoch times

Organizations hope to indict former president for torture

An American human rights organization says it plans to take action around former President George W. Bush’s plans to speak at an economic conference near Vancouver, Canada, in October.

The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is claiming credit for the cancellation of Bush’s visit to Switzerland last week where he was to speak at a dinner in Geneva.

...

“I think we have to strategize and think that through with colleagues up in Canada,” she told the Georgia Straight newspaper in Vancouver. “It’s the next visit that we’ve heard about and we’re going to be following up and seeing what we know about it and preparing for it.”

Both Bush and Bill Clinton are scheduled to be featured speakers at the fourth annual Surrey Regional Economic Summit on Oct. 20, outside of Vancouver.

1. Why do they publicize these plans in advance?
Edited on Mon Feb-14-11 12:30 AM by Newsjock
Sure, it's nice to scare Dumbya away from going anywhere in the world, but wouldn't it be better to actually let him enter another country and then send him off to The Hague?

but maybe they are protecting themselves from the nefarious Bush Crime Family? Or maybe they are publicising to built support for a bigger movement against the war criminals.

Not as soul-satisfying as an arrest would be, but anything that curbs Commander Codpiece's ability to move about the world freely speading his own special brand of BS is a good thing. I'll take it. Happily.

19. Shame on Bill Clinton for fronting this war criminal
When Bush first came to Canada a few years ago, Bill Clinton shamelessly shared the stage with him, thereby sparing his war criminal crony from being booed by people in the audience.

See http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Bush+Clinton+talk+Afghanistan/1644777/story.html

I regret that Clinton is once again hoping to provide cover for this war criminal, and I hope this time he gets booed off the stage along with Bush.

Better still, maybe the group investigating war crimes can investigate Clinton's actions in office and maybe prepare something "special" for him.

I presume from his pandering to Bush that Clinton is a paid PR shill for W. What some people won't do for money.

35. They sit on the same stage "in conversation"
Look at the picture with the article I linked to. It's a definite ploy. You can't boo one without booing the other. It gives cover to Bush, and to conservatives who really don't mind paying to hear from a war criminal. It was the same setup later in Toronto.

I don't know why Bill Clinton is so dedicated to trying to make Bush the war criminal respectable. He even managed to get him named c-chair for the Haiti relief fund, which no doubt resulted in reduced donations to that cause.

I presume Clinton is providing this reputation recovery PR service for money.

37. It might be that Clinton does not consider Bush to be a war criminal.
After all, Clinton did some questionable things too such as bombing that aspirin factory. So perhaps Clinton is afraid that if Bush gets taken down he will too.

40. Yeah, he has a similar but less serious problem
Clinton could be indicted, but the case is pretty weak, at least compared to Bush (who has admitted to authorizing torture) and I doubt he is seriously concerned about it.

Sadly, I think Clinton is fronting for Bush simply for money. He probably gets paid directly for his PR "reputational restoration" services on behalf of W, and also indirectly gets lucrative contracts from other right-wing business people at least in part because they take comfort in seeing him visibly working to support Bush.

43. The Clinton's and The Bush's have the international aide thing that they
do together. Being on the board of these aide programs seems to line their pockets some what nicely (i.e. via leaked cables - Aide given to Central America due to unrest was provided by one of Mrs Clinton's organisations that she sits on the board; at the same time she sat back as SOS regarding BS in Central America we supported. Then they sent their guys in.)
These aide programs are set up so those on the board are paid, even though they are "not for profit" people make money.
cheers
Sandy

23. We have officially arrived at 3rd world status, congratulations USA.
Edited on Mon Feb-14-11 09:12 AM by fasttense
When you have a former national leader publicly known for their authorization and promotion of torture, who has to travel very carefully (due to nations actually enforcing the treaties they sign) then you know you are officially a 3rd world nation. Especially if this former head of state is NOT prosecuted even when their own laws claim torture is a crime.

Nope Kissinger wasn't enough (though it was a good try), he only promoted war crimes. To qualify it has to be the head of state and include torture to be officially considered a 3rd world nation. See, now the USA is on par with Pinochet's Chile.

Milton Friedman and Stalin would be so proud.

There was talk of arresting him then. But the only ones arrested were 4 protesters.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2009/03/17/cgy-bush-speech-calgary.html

It looks like we Canadians have the laws on our side, but its futile to think the powers that be will ever act on calls to arrest the little twerp.

http://daviditron.wordpress.com/2009/02/15/bush-to-visit-calgarylegal-authority-to-arrest-him/

I'm sure our neo-con wannabe Prime Minister will have given his idol all the reassurances that that's not going to happen. I don't know how they get away with not enforcing their own laws, but that's whats going to happen once again. It helps with a corporate media helping out with the move-along-nothing-to-see-here attitude.
