Human Rights Watch, citing doctors, says at least 297 killed in Egyptian uprising so far
U.S.-based Human Rights Watch says at least 297 people have been killed since Egypt's anti-government uprising began two weeks ago.


The revolt against President Hosni Mubarak that erupted on Jan. 25 brought days of fierce clashes with police and intense battles with violent pro-Mubarak gangs.

The violence has spread to other parts of Egypt and the toll includes a significant number of deaths outside the capital Cairo.

1. That's What I Heard Yesterday from an Egyptian Friend
who has relatives in the city -- namely that publicly announced casualties are greatly understated.

His cousin was driving to visit his uncle, who is a general and lives in a gated community in Giza. On the way, a mob attempted to carjack him. He managed to plow through the mob, but his car body was pretty much destroyed in the process. On the way back he got a military escort and saw another car which had been successfully carjacked. The driver's throat was slit. He said the troops "took care of the carjackers."
