Police: 1 dead, 11 shot at Ohio fraternity house
Source: AP

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Authorities in northeast Ohio say a shooting at a fraternity house just north of the Youngstown State University campus killed one student and injured 11 people, including six students.

Youngstown police Lt. Franklin Palmer says the shooting happened early Sunday and no arrests have been made.

A statement from the school says officers are working to identify suspects, and the YSU police chief says there's no threat to the campus.

1. UPDATED: 1 dead, 1 critical, 10 wounded near YSU
Foley said 12 people were shot during the exchange of gunfire. Ten of those wounded in the shooting are expected to fully recover. According to a campus alert issued this morning, six of the wounded were students and were treated at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

YSU spokesman Ron Cole said many of the students shot were members of a sanctioned YSU fraternity who lived in a private, off-campus house.

16. Except that, you know, nobody actually says that.
Please look up the definition of straw-man argument.

31. Who said that, when, and where?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 10:05 AM by slackmaster
Let's see some examples.

(I'll give you a hint: Several people have made the same argument in the past, and upon being challenged have consistently failed to come up with supporting evidence. It's a Straw Man.)

The real problem in this case is that the criminal justice system failed to control two known major criminals.

6. It is a private residence, NOT a frat house (Former Sigma Chi house - now a rental)
Edited on Sun Feb-06-11 12:23 PM by shadowrider
Although the party was attended by sanctioned frat members from YSU.

Info is sketchy but I'll betcha it's drug and/or gang related.

10. It does make a difference. It did NOT occur at a frat house
This shooting is horrible, but blame is immediately being placed for the incident happening at a "sanctioned frat house" which is not the case.

I say again, this was at a private residence and, I'm going to GUESS, was drug and/or gang related.

It looks to me like two gang members crashed a student party, were ejected, then came back and shot the place up in anger. This was a premeditated act of violence by known criminals.

19. Yes, but the "hate the rich/kill the rich" meme runs thick here
If you are in college and in a frat you obviously have money (which is not true unless you are at an elite school, which this in not) and are somehow deserving of this fate -- if not directly, through the "sins" on the father.

This sick, reactionary crap has kept me from recommending this site to anyone for years.

whose grandiose visions of some glorious revolution have distorted their grasp of reality.

Jesse Jackson is a member.

The "rich pampered frat boy" meme is an utter facepalm here.

25. Two Arrested....
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Two men angry over a dispute at an Ohio fraternity house party left the gathering and returned early Sunday, spraying bullets into a crowd and killing a Youngstown State University student, authorities said. Eleven other people were injured, including a 17-year-old with a critical head wound.

The men were arrested and charged later Sunday with aggravated murder, shooting into a house and 11 counts of felonious assault, Youngstown police Chief Jimmy Hughes said. The suspects are in their early 20s and from the Youngstown area, but Hughes withheld their names pending further investigation.

24. In the 80s I lived in a kinda frat house
non greek fraternity. At times it looked like a Sam Peckinpah movie. I'm surprised nobody got killed. I'm more surprised that the university health center never reported gunshot wounds.

28. This was a gang hit. Suspects are due in court this morning. More information here.
...The altercation has been said to be linked to others at the Metroplex in Girard, the Love Lounge downtown and/or regarding female party goers.

Rogers has no adult criminal record. Jones has a burglary conviction and was charged with felony drug possession 3 times....

32. It was Omega Psi Phi. Black fraternities usually don't have official chapter houses
Edited on Mon Feb-07-11 02:23 PM by Freddie Stubbs
The picture of the house in the article shows a house without any greek letters on it. These facts would leave me to believe that this was simply a house where some fraternity brothers lives, but not an actual frat house.
