Egyptian Mob Burns Al Jazeera's Cairo Office
Source: ABC

Now It's Arab Governments Angry With the TV Network

Al Jazeera's office in Cairo was stormed and burned today, the most dramatic evidence yet that Egyptian authorities are desperate to shut down the network widely praised for revealing the size and reach of the demonstrations.

Over the last week nine of the network's reporters have been detained and satellite providers across the region have shut its signal off.

The assault on Al Jazeera is part of an offensive against the foreign press by those in Cairo upset by the portrayal of the rock and fire bomb battles. More than 100 reporters, including those from ABC News, have menaced, threatened with death and beaten in the streets.

Much of the anger by the supporters of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has been aimed at Al Jazeera.

That authorities have targeted reporters for Al Jazeera English – as well as those for Al Jazeera Arabic -- shows how the younger, more analytical of the two channels has come echo the Arabic channel's ability to get under the skin of autocratic, unpopular regimes.

For almost five years, Al Jazeera English has followed a single motto: "Giving voice to the voiceless." Despite the attempts to silence it, the network's coverage of the revolts seem to be ensuring that its own voice is only getting louder.

2. No mention of injuries...
No news, good news? Hope so.

It's a sad day for humanity when journalists become unwilling soldiers and martyrs. An enormous thank you to all journalists for keeping us informed at your own risk.

...the fact that Bush isn't prez anymore and noone needs to care what he thinks about anything will sink into the brains of all DU'ers.

There was a nasty hunt on for the media yesterday, which was kind of odd since normally you would want to shut the media up before sending in the thugs.

5. What I don't get:
By hunting the media, the story just becomes louder, so why do it?

7. Revenge
Scorched Earth. Collective punishment.

It also gives the boys a few days to loot as much as they can. They want to leave Egypt a burned out shell as a lesson to others.

10. I suspect they really think out of site out of mind is true. If they think
we believe they are peaceful because it is not on the tv then they have a think coming. The US does not evacuate it's people because of a peaceful demonstration. The media does not shut down because of a peaceful demonstration. The result of this kind of fascism is that we lose total respect for their government leaders. So mubarak - we see who you are and we want our government to stop propping you up. We have found a badly needed cut that I can agree on.

8. Good grief...anyone proofread that article? Apparently not.
Anyway...yeah, it's not surprising Mubarak's supporters would want to suppress the truth.

11. I was going to write that. Simple words are missing, there are many incomplete sentences.
It's not just a matter of a typo or two, there are mistakes throughout the article.

12. Article title should be, "Egyptian GOVERNMENT Mob Burns Al Jazeera Office."
Not just, "Egyptian mob...etc. The headline gives a very wrong impression.

Generally, the corpo-fascist tries to portray legitimate protest and legitimate revolution as disorderly and mob-like. In Seattle, they ignored 10,000 peaceful people in an awesome civil disobedience protest and focused all cameras on a few young "anarchist" punks who were supplied by the WTO or the Darth Vader cops (in my opinion), and, at the least, were very pointedly allowed to break windows and burn trash cans while the cops beat up the peaceful. They also ignored the 50,000 other protesters in Seattle who marched but did not commit civil disobedience. This is how it goes with corpo-fascist press. They are goddamn liars. So I'm very alert to their headlines, lede lines and "framing" of news stories, and to the overall impression they are trying to convey in successions of news stories. It may be that, in this case, the headline writer was responding to signals from the CIA/U.S. government, to wind down portrayal of these protests in Egypt and the Middle East as genuine and legitimate rebellion, because the U.S. can't gain control of the situation and they are going to continue to support illegitimate governments, thus, if you just glance at this headline, you get the impression that the Egyptian protestors are deteriorating into a wild, angry, looting, destructive mob. That impression is corrected by the sub-title and the lede line, but I wonder if it was merely a poorly written headline, or a hint of a coming turn in U.S. policy against legitimate protest in Egypt and the Middle East.
