New Mexico gas announces mass service disruptions, Taos included
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 01:46 PM by harvey007
Source: Taos News

Countless New Mexicans won't be able to get natural gas indefinitely, as the company posted an announcement on its website Thursday morning (Feb. 3) that rolling blackouts in Texas have disrupted pipeline delivery.

5. It was -6 degrees in Santa Fe this morning
that's "Minus" six degrees. Not a good time to be without heat.

22. Texas has its own
electric grid, which I learned recently. And I thought it was odd. Totally separate from the rest of the US. There are various regions of our grid network.

Texas got some very cold temperatures and brownouts occurred. So I guess this affects the pipelines for gas.

This is just horrible. I hope people in NM have places to stay where there are generators...or electric heat.

I can't say I'm surprised....Welcome to the 3rd World.

Good luck!!!

23. The problem with the gas
Is related to the blackouts. They shut down electricity to the gas compressor stations that send natural gas to NM.

8. They've closed schools, government offices and the air base
and are telling us all to lower our thermostats 10 degrees and wear coats.

Might've known it was fucking Texas causing the problem.

11. Half a dozen coal burning power plants in Texas can't operate
because the incoming water lines to make steam froze.

I don't know why people don't love wind energy more - no C02, no mountaintop removal, no complications. And do those mills turn in cold weather? You bet they do.

9. We have gas

in Lincoln County. But no hot water at home. Frozen pipe, last night minus 15 F. Almost a foot of snow on the ground.

Did you see first comment to Toas News story? Someone blamed repug gov. Susana la Tejana and her Texas cronies who financed her campaign.

19. Taos dropped to -25 this AM
As NM Gas decided to cut service to the county.

There are no space heaters to be found in the area as all the stores sold out as soon as they opened. Kit Carson electric is warning of power losses so now people are making runs on the grocery stores buying food and water.

There are many reasons for this including the rolling blackouts in TX that cut power to the gas compression stations which have switched from being gas fired to electrical.

13. Another "get shorty" should do it
And what better state to pull that one on than NM....which Texans think they own anyway.

16. Couldn't that be dangerous? Gas line explosions and appliances
that leak because they went off during the outage and the pilot did not reignite.

24. They cut service to specific areas
Because it's easier to control the danger. They are going to spend the next day or so turning off every meter in the affected areas and then they will re-pressurize the system. Once the system is functional, they'll spend another day or so turning on the meters and lighting pilot lights. If residents aren't home, the meters won't be turned back on. We're not looking for a return of service any earlier than Sunday.

18. No doubt, ...
El Paso Electric is gaming the system like they did when
we had the rolling blackout in California.

EPE controls all the gas lines into California from the SW,
and was only using about 20% bandwidth of the pipeline.

Basically limiting the gas and creating an artificial increase
in demand to raise the rates.

Answer this:
Why is this happening during the coldest part of winter?
