Congressman's Husband Exults: 'Gabby Survives'
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: February 3, 2011

Filed at 9:47 a.m. EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' husband says his wife continues to improve from a gunshot wound in the head last month, saying that "Thankfully, miraculously, Gabby survives."

Speaking to the National Prayer Breakfast, astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly said "I hadn't been a big believer in faith until just recently."

He said he told his recovering wife that "this event, horrible and tragic, was not merely random, that maybe something good can come from this."

Kelly didn't go into details about his wife's recuperation from being shot in the head at a Tucson shopping center less than a month ago. But he did say that, "Every day, she gets a little better." And he says doctors and neurosurgeons have told him "that's a great sign, the slope of that curve is very important."

5. Her Doctor is calling her recovery miraculous.
If it was all "science that saved her" they could do it every time. That's the argument against spirituality isn't it - that it's not repeatable the way science is.

Anyway, no matter what you believe, it's a jerky thing to say about someone in Giffords' husbands situation. If someone you loved dearly was shot through the brain you might pray too.

6. Not a miracle, but good medical science.
They have learned much over the years about these kinds of injuries, unfortunately as a result of our gun culture and wars. But, regardless of what the doctor said, it is not a miracle.

7. It's a fucking miracle she didn't die on the spot.
Her doctor probably has more of a clue than you do about her condition and the odds of her having survived what she did.

8. That's why Loughner was sent!
If Loughner hadn't shown up, it's just another day in the life of a Congresswoman. But god is jealous. He wants to be noticed. A well timed miracle always gets 'em.

11. Waddaya like, "devine intervention," or "extremely unusual?"
That's just the dictionary. What does miracle mean to you?

BTW, which god do you mean?

14. You did. A miracle assumes divine intervention.

9. Actually, we know very little about how the brain and sentience work.
Edited on Thu Feb-03-11 08:35 PM by PavePusher
The mechanical stuff, controlling bleeding, putting skin, skull and tissue in the right places, controlling bleeding and holding everything in places while the physical matter heals, a little.

But how to fix a damaged or malfunctioning brain and the cogitational processes, we're wandering in the dark, feeling around not just for the light switch, but for the very walls of the rooms themselves.

Luck, faith, miracle, fate... use what words you will, but it is very much a mystery still.

15. Fantastic news, when all is said and done it is she and her family left
to deal with the healing process. Great to hear there are wonderful signs of recovery!
