You can now add Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) to the growing list of members of the U.S. Congress that will be taking their security measures literally into their own hands. She announced that she'll be carrying a concealed weapon in her home district.

Ellmers has had a concealed-carry permit since February 2010. She told The Charlotte Observer:

"I have one. And I'll be carrying."

Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC), a former hunter, also said that she is considering toting a gun:

"I've been thinking of it for some time and haven't gotten around to it. I'm a pretty good shot. Most women are."

1. Very useful!

7. Maybe she's a "Quick Draw" too?

Being a good shot means nothing, unless you walk around with a loaded gun in your hand or on your hip... then you are only marginally safer. You can be shot before you ever see the assailant.

2. But why?
Words and images don't affect people negatively, right? What is she afraid of?

5. Superb point
If this was the random act of a madman that had nothing to do with politics, why is she more at risk now?

11. Republicans don't need protection - the Democrats need protection from
the anti-government types.

6. Yeah...
Cause after one's shot in the head by a lunatic in a surprise attack that concealed weapon will come in real handy.

I'm relieved knowing yet another complete idiot is an elected official.

13. Difi was carrying well before this.
She had a CCW, and after taking heat, for having it whilst lobbying for prohibition of the same thing for us peons, let it go and got herself deputized as a US marshal so she could do it without one.

unnecessary to announce the fact that she is packing.

14. Uh oh....hope she doesn't have anyone in particular in her sights.
She's much more likely to shoot someone, than she is to be the victim of a crime.

16. Being a member of Congress, the district will issue her a permit without delay
Unlike what happens when an "ordinary citizen" of DC applies for one.

All animals are not created equal.
