A military advisory commission is recommending that the Pentagon do away with the policy, saying that military assignments should be designated by qualification regardless of sex. Currently, women are not allowed assignment to any unit smaller than a brigade whose primary mission is direct combat on the ground.
While women are technically prohibited from combat, thousands of women have found themselves in combat roles during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars due both to the lack of a true front line in either conflict and their service in combat support roles, such as medics and logistics truck drivers. A special panel set up by Congress two years ago to look at diversity issues is meeting Friday to go over the final draft of their report.
According to the report, there should be “a level playing field for all qualified service members.”
