Wikileaks leak suspect Manning seeks release

Pvt. Bradley Manning, the Army intelligence analyst suspected of leaking hundreds of thousands of military reports and classified diplomatic cables to Wikileaks, is seeking release from pretrial confinement, his lawyer said Thursday.

Lawyer David Coombs said in a blog post that his client has complained repeatedly about the conditions of his detention at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., including being held in what the attorney called solitary confinement, being allowed only an hour outside his cell per day, and being repeatedly woken by guards.

"Due to the lack of response from the confinement facility, the defense, pursuant to the provisions of Rule for Courts-Martial (R.C.M.) 305(g), filed a request earlier today with the Garrison Commander to direct the release of PFC Bradley Manning from pretrial confinement," Coombs wrote. "This request is based upon the fact that the confinement conditions currently being endured by PFC Manning are more rigorous than necessary to guarantee his presence at trial, and that the concerns raised by the government at the time of pretrial confinement are no longer applicable."

3. I hope if he is released...
I think he's going to need to receive asylum outside the US, for his own protection. Heavens.... I can not imagine how he would remain safe in this country from all the angry frothers with guns.

6. Even if he is released
He'll be restricted to base and assigned an escort 24/7....so seeking asylum outside of the US isn't an option!

Any interviews with the media probably will not be allowed....but he won't be locked up 23 hours a day.

7. Coombs has an uphill battle.
He has to make the case -- to the base commander, Quantico -- that Manning's confinement conditions are more rigorous than necessary.

I suspect Col. Choike has a fair amount of precedent to back up his position on Manning's confinement. I'm no Marine; who do base commanders report to?
