War opponents arrested at White House

Dozens of activists, including the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers on the Vietnam War, were arrested Thursday at the White House as they protested the Afghanistan conflict and defended WikiLeaks.

As President Barack Obama unveiled a war review strategy inside, more than 100 war opponents -- many of them veterans -- marched through snow to the White House, chanting "Peace now!" and refusing to step down from the fence's ledge.

Police waited before gradually sealing off the area and escorting remaining protesters -- who had vowed to stay until their arrest -- into two waiting buses.

Daniel Ellsberg, who as a government consultant leaked the Pentagon Papers that revealed war planning in Vietnam, saluted Bradley Manning, the young army officer suspected of leaking secret US documents to website WikiLeaks.

They are all very brave to protest these wars at the White House. These folks all look very cold.

Is that Pete Seeger to the left of the man in the right jacket? Pete is 91 an still going strong.

But I can't tell if that's him in the OP photo. I wouldn't be surprised, though.

Part of what I saw--Seeger so happy after Obama's election. Me, too. I'm disappointed, but at east I'm not 91.

After a lifetime of fighting for this country, including WWII, it would be hell to this disappointed AND 91. Hope?

Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 04:55 PM by Roy Rolling
When the VVAW stepped into the ring, the Vietnam War was knocked out but still on its feet. One of the proudest moments in U.S. history was to hear the truth from those who had a stake in the argument and not just hear from those who were making a buck from the killing. The VVAW were true heroes----their sacrifice saved countless lives.:patriot:

24. Anyone see the show on decorating the WH for Christmas?
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 12:48 AM by No Elephants
Versailles comes to mind.

An the decorating theme was, not without unintentional irony, "Simple gifts," 'cause, as Mrs. Obama said, "The best things in life cost nothing."

Nineteen 20 foot high pine trees, lavish decorations, 20,0000 fresh baked cookies, some BO-shaped and a huge white chocolate coated gingerbread White House with interior electricity for the miniature chandeliers later.... 100 interior decorators from all oer the country--volunteers, but airfare, hotels and meals....80 pounds of brie for one party..and a highly skilled staff big enough to populate a town,,,because the best things in life cost nothing. Possibly the most tone deaf TV show in history.

Meanwhile...most of the rest of America is either jobless or terrified of becoming jobless and seniors and disabled have not had an increase and will not get one next year--as food prices skyrocket. Simple gifts indeed--for them.

And war protesters get arrested for standing on a ledge.

Let 'em eat drones.

26. FBI's 9/11 Whistleblower Coleen Rowley Arrested Protesting Against War, for Exposure of War Crimes
Source: BRAD BLOG

FBI's 9/11 Whistleblower Coleen Rowley Arrested Protesting Against War, for Exposure of War Crimes
TIME's 2002 'Person of the Year' detained along with fellow whistleblowers, former intelligence agents, military vets
Rowley set to appear live with Brad on the 'Malloy Show' Friday...

Snow-covered peace activists and military veterans --- as well as legendary whistleblowers and former intelligence officers --- were arrested today in front of the White House while protesting the War in Afghanistan and rallying in support of WikiLeaks and for the exposure of war crimes.

The BRAD BLOG spoke with one of those arrested, the FBI's 9/11 whistleblower and TIME's 2002 Person of the Year Coleen Rowley, within the past two hours, shortly after she was released from custody by the Capitol Hill police. Rowley had traveled some 22 hours with a group of about 17 fellow Minnesotans to participate in today's protest and paid a $100 fine for the charge of "refusal to obey a lawful order."

Also arrested at the protest today were Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg (who we recently interviewed about WikiLeaks), 27-year veteran CIA analyst Ray McGovern (who we recently wrote about after last weekend's appearance on CNN telling host Don Lemon that CNN should "following example" by "seek out secrets" and Putlitzer prize-winning former New York Times correspondent Chris Hedges.

"We were protesting against war crimes and for exposing war crimes," Rowley explained earlier tonight…

NOTE: I'll be filling in again tomorrow night (Friday) as guest host on the Mike Malloy Show. Coleen Rowley will be one of my guests. Please tune in at 9pm ET/6pm PT. Listen links will be available tomorrow at http://BradBlog.com or http://MikeMalloy.com - Brad

I often wonder if this is how German citizens felt in the early 1930's?
