Medics Tell Winter Bug Sufferers To Stay Away

People suffering with flu-like symptoms or the norovirus are being advised to stay away from hospitals and GPs this winter.

The warning by health experts and medical staff comes after an increase in the number of flu cases being reported across the UK.

One hospital in particular, The Princess Royal University Hospital in Kent, is turning away patients with norovirus symptoms and asking them to stay at home.

In a statement, the South London Healthcare NHS Trust said: "Please only visit the hospital if it's essential. We are restricting visitors to two per patient.

Critical Escalation of Severe and Fatal H1N1 In England

Recombinomics
December 16, 2010

Ten of the worst affected patients whose lungs have given out, including three pregnant women, are being treated on Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machines. A further six critically ill patients are waiting for spaces on the machines to become available. Extra beds have been opened in four hospitals at Papworth in Huntingdonshire, the Royal Brompton in London, Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS trust and University Hospitals of South Manchester, in addition to the existing unit at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.

Last year only Papworth and the Royal Brompton were opened.

The numbers of severely ill patients have taken specialists by surprise because monitoring suggests low levels of swine flu in the community.

"Something different is happening this year. The last 10 days have seen a sudden surge of activity. The numbers in intensive care are increasing across the UK. In the north west they are more than at the peak of the pandemic.

1. There is a lot of "flu-like" virus illness here in Eastern PA at this time, too...
My wife and I both got the flu shots early this year - in September - and both of us are just recovering from this "other" virus after several weeks of discomfort. It seems to be a respiratory illness, but has the body aches and discomfort of a virus, along with difficulty sleeping and general malease...

3. I have bitter experience with this.
Two weeks ago, I lost my darling wife to the flu. She was asthmatic, with chronic respiratory problems. The onset was sudden, and she died within days of its start.

4. I am so sorry to hear this!
You have my deepest sympathy.

We're a family of asthmatics and the flu always kicks us on our butts. Most people don't understand what it does to an asthmatic. :(

5. My deepest sympathies for your loss
This is why flu should be taken very seriously by everyone.

6. Chaz, both my wife and myself take extra care because of health problems...
But sometimes it seems it comes from the most casual contact, such as shopping, etc...

I am very sorry for your loss - I would be out of my mind.

7. i am sorry and it's unfortunate they're telling people w. flu like symptoms to avoid the doctor
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 04:44 PM by pitohui
a friend's wife died suddenly -- she was 52 -- i am not sure why she didn't see the doc in time but i have the impression that because of her age she assumed it wasn't serious

another friend's cousin died age 34 -- he thought he could tough it out and not go to the doc because he was young, it cost him his life

telling people w. flu like symptoms to stay home is not good advice, the flu kills, and sadly it sometimes is more likely to kill the apparently "healthy" because you think it's nothing and it doesn't seem worth seeing the doctor over

by the time it progresses to pneumonia some people are going to die

i would say if you have the flu, don't try to tough it out, get to the damn doctor and if the doctor tells you to GFY (as has happened to me in the past and to other people) then maybe get a new doctor

the flu really can kill if not treated in time

if everything was cured by staying home and tough it out, who would need modern medical tech?

the time i was turned away my "flu" progressed to pneumonia, i am lucky to be alive

telling people not to see the doctor is just a cold, calculated economic decision, i was turned away the first time for treatment because i had no health insurance and eventually only got treated after i nearly died

and there was simply no reason, other than cold economics and not caring by the medical community, that i should have needed to get that sick first

2. Dr. Niman, the founder of Recombinomics, used to post here and
was TS'ed, not sure why. He is a brilliant man.

Bio:

Recombinomics, Inc. Founder and President, Henry L Niman earned a PhD at the University of Southern California in 1978. His dissertation focused on feline retroviral expression in tumors in domestic cats.

He took a postdoctoral position at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation where he developed monoclonal antibody technology. He fused monoclonal antibody and synthetic peptide technologies and accepted a staff position at Scripps.

In 1982, he developed the flu monoclonal antibody, which is widely used throughout the pharmaceutical, biotech, and research industries in epitope tagging techniques. He also produced a broad panel of monoclonal antibodies against synthetic peptides of oncogenes and growth factors. These monoclonal antibodies were distributed worldwide to researchers by the National Cancer Institute. The antibodies identified novel related proteins which correlated with clinical parameters.

This technology was used to form ProgenX, a cancer diagnostic company that became Ligand Pharmaceuticals. Dr Niman subsequently identified protein expression patterns at the University of Pittsburgh. More recently, he became interested in infectious diseases while at Harvard Medical School. He then founded Recombinomics and discovered how viruses rapidly evolve. These latest findings are the subject of recent patent filings.

I used to get so disgusted with friends that would haul their obviously sick children to visit at my home, in turn making my daughter catch whatever was currently "going around."

The fact that people need to be told to keep their germs away from hospitals is very telling and, imho, is indicative of the state of total thoughtlessness so many live in these days.

Thanks, cory! :hi:
