Obama calls meeting with GOP leaders 'good start'

AP

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling his meeting with congressional Republicans "a good start" on efforts to work more closely to resolve differences over taxes, budget and national security....Republicans set the tone for the session early, declaring steadfast opposition to any tax increases when the current Bush era tax cuts expire at the end of the year. Obama has said he would oppose a permanent extension of the tax cuts for taxpayers earning more than $200,000 as individuals and $250,000 as couples. At the same time a couple of Republican senators signaled possible movement on the START treaty which would reduce nuclear weapons arsenals in the U.S. and Russia. Obama has made approval of the treaty this year a top national security goal.

10. Indeed - We Are.
Seems Obama and the dems have concluded that they will not stand for anything but try to "triangulate" and succumb to rethugs. We will now be inundated with congressional dems justifying why we need to accept the right-wing positions for everything.

17. Actual translation: we'll get a ton of Republican shit done in the next 2 years.
Obama is chomping at the bit to cave to their demands.

19. "chomping at the bit", seriously?
I'm sure we'll get abortion banned, health care reform and financial regulation undone, half of the cabinet eliminated, church prayers at every school. Oh, and we'll torture every Muslim in this country, whether they're a terrorist or not.

C'mon guys, I know a lot of ppl here are disappointed with Obama, but you need to be a little more realistic in your assessment on him.

20. You haven't been paying attention...
When he caves on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, civil liberties encroachments, tax cuts for the wealthy, and a host of other things, and those of us whom you describe as unrealistic are saying, "See... we told you so", you (and others who think like you) will be nowhere to be found. It's like a broken record. You'll never learn.

24. He's caved on Medicare/Medicaid? On tax cuts to the wealthy?
Medicare/Medicaid story is one of the most poorly reported story. It's making savings into Medicare, not destroying or hurting it. Social Security? He hasn't even so far as touched SS as an issue(neither has Congress) although they probably will next year. And so far it still looks like the Democrats are going to make them vote on two separate tax cuts. In fact, today Obama was talking about holding two separate votes.

Iowa, if you want to rip on Obama's willingness to compromise, you need to come up with a better list then the BS you threw at me.

23. This is where the word "appeasement" actually should be used.
"Collaboration" would be useful too and "Quisling."
