"Witch's brew" of explosives linked to terrorism found in Escondido home
Source: East County Magazine

November 20, 2010 (Escondido) – More than nine pounds of Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine (HMTD), a powerful explosive used in suicide bombings and terrorist plots including the planned Millennium bombing in L.A., have been discovered by authorities at an Escondido home.

George Jakubec, 54, a renter at the property in the 1900 block of Via Scott in Escondido’s unincorporated area, has been arrested and is being held on $100,000 bail. A gardener who stepped on explosive material Thursday was seriously injured, prompting authorities to search the property. After discovering a massive cache of explosives, bomb squad members buried the explosive materials and shut down I-15 Friday afternoon as a precaution while the devices were detonated. Authorities are still on site and will remain there tomorrow, Lt. Dave Brown with the San Diego Sheriff’s office told East County Magazine tonight.

Caldwell has indicated the freeway may be shut down again to allow for detonation of more hazardous materials.

<snip>

Terrorist suspects arrested for plotting to blow up 10 airplanes traveling from the United Kingdom to the U.S. and Canada in 2006 were found to have HMTD at their residences. The substance has also been widely used in suicide bombings around the world. Ahmed Ressam, the Al-Qaeda Millennium Bomber, planned to use HMTD in a foiled plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport on New Year’s Eve in 1999, the New York Times reported.

If a gardener hadn't accidentally detonated one of these devices, what would Jakubec have done with them? Was he a lone nut (perhaps plotting a workplace revenge, after being fired and sued by a former employer) or part of a terrorist cell?

If the latter, it would not be the first time San Diego has been a hotbed of terrorism. Two of the 911 hijackers lived in San Diego. Other terrorism suspects have been apprehended crossing the border. Just last week, a Somali woman was arrested here, accused of ties to a Somali terrorist group.

So who is George Djura Jakobec, and what was he really up to?

14. Or, some even more sinister organization?
Where will the bail money come from, if it comes?

Via Telecom appears to be a secretive private company. http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/private/people.asp?privcapId=6578176

Who owns it?

12. His religion will not be important to the media unless he is a Muslim
Edited on Sun Nov-21-10 01:58 AM by Angry Dragon
Muslims are the only terrorists in the world.

Terrorists come from all religions, nations, colors, they come every where.
The media forgets this all the time.

Today the Founding Fathers would be considered terrorists because they were fighting for their freedom from a repressive foreign government. We have become a repressive foreign government.

24. no, I understood the gardener
was doing a job and unwittingly stepped on or was otherwise injured by explosives. I assume he was then taken to a nearby hospital and treated.

It's an easy question for you, What in your eyes makes this guy a Hero?

Here's what I think. I think he's a lucky man that he isn't dead.
I also think you have no idea what constitutes a "real" hero.

Have a nice Sunday.

10. The name Jakobec probably suggests Slovenian nationality.
Used to be part of Yugoslavia, I think.

13. Certainly was part of Yugoslavia.
But Jakubec, like Djura, is perfectly good Serbian or Croatian.

Jakobec would say "Slovenian."

"George" doesn't exactly scream "Muslim" or "Kosovar" at me. But there are Srbove who are convinced that the US interfered in a biased manner against good Orthodox Slavs to help bad Muslim Albanians. Not to mention those with local grievances of one sort or another.

It'll be interesting to see what his complaint was, what the rationale was.

16. FOGS report ----

http://www.fox5sandiego.com/news/kswb-escondido-bomb-update,0,251906.story

The "witch's brew" was apparently a collection of chemicals that are potential precursors of the explosive. He was apparently in a position to make more of the explosive.

Being FOX they meladramatized the story with terms like "POWERFUL explosion" but the victim is shown in the hospital bed with a small cut over his eye. He also had a hurt finger from what I understand.

From sheriff's spokesperson Jan Caldwell saying it was a TYPE of explosive that is "very powerful" FOX turned it into a "POWERFUL EXPLOSION." If the explosion was really so great, the injury would have been greater.

The FOX report also said the material had "the potential to devastate a neighborhood." This falsely makes it sound like the material was enough to blow up all the houses in the entire neighborhood, another exaggeration.
