Incoming Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said incoming Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is "known to cry."

"You know what? He is known to cry. He cries sometimes when we’re having a debate on bills. If I cry, it’s about the personal loss of a friend or something like that. But when it comes to politics — no, I don’t cry. I would never think of crying about any loss of an office, because that’s always a possibility, and if you’re professional, then you deal with it professionally," Pelosi (D-Calif.) told the New York Times magazine.

She noted: "I have deep emotions about the American people. If I were to cry for anything, I would cry for them and the policies that they’re about to face."

Was she responding to an insinuation that women were too emotional to be effective in politics? I don't really think a person's emotional expressions--apart from inappropriate rage or anger that can be threatening--should be grounds for criticism. Ridiculing men for crying has long been a not-too-subtle method of portraying them as effeminate, and not "real men" capable of doing "men's work"; obviously, resting on the understanding that the "feminine" is inferior.

I respect Nancy Pelosi as a feminist leader(I saw her speak a few years ago at the CDA convention in St. Louis), so I doubt she was overtly painting a picture like that. The story seems very incomplete to me. However, it seems that many of the responses to her comment have tended to fall into that trap. Feminism involves allowing and encouraging men to express the full range of human emotions that have been denied to them in order to preserve their sense of "manly" identity. There's plenty to criticize about Boehner's regressive attitudes and destructive policies, and the atmosphere of overt hostility, and party-before-country that he and other Republican leaders are fostering in their overt plans to sabotage the political process and the president, without resorting to making fun of him for crying a lot.

To be clear, I'm not making this point out of concern for Mr. Boehner's feelings. It's out of concern for the cultural shift I promote as a feminist, and my awareness of the long term damage to that shift that such ridicule causes.
