Scientists find new seismic fault in Rocky Mountains
Source: BBC News

Scientists at Idaho State University have mapped a new, active seismic fault in the Rocky Mountains in the US state of Idaho capable of unleashing a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

A university official has warned the fault could release a damaging earthquake within the next few decades.

The 40-mile fracture runs close to the small town of Stanley, a community with roughly 100 year-round residents.

A 7.5 tremor is capable of devastating areas along a fault.

1. The ones they know about aren't the scary ones --
it's the ones they don't know about -- like Loma Preita and Northridge. :scared:

I am sure the country is full of previously unknown fault systems.

2. Is it *new* or is it newly discovered?
Just curious. Suppose I'll click the link and see if it says... :)

3. This somehow implies a newly discovered risk....
There are other fault lines along the Rockies including one that runs along the Tetons. Given the seismic acitivity (and volcanic) of Yellowstone, there is lots of previously known risk to go around.

5. Interesting.
Probably even worrisome to a few militias with camps in the area...

6. Naw - the militias have a five year supply of survival food socked away
Plus they probably have an old school bus buried with a million rounds of ammo in it. Those gap toothed, knuckle draggers aren't worried at all.
