Bristol Palin's dancing prompts man to shoot his TV
Source: jsonline

A rural Dane County man believes Bristol Palin should not be on "Dancing With The Stars."

He demanded his wife get his pistols to emphasize his point.

The result: A 15-hour standoff Monday and Tuesday involving hostage negotiators, a dog team and other law enforcement authorities on one side and the Town of Vermont man on the other.

The only casualty: The man's television.

Dane County prosecutors have charged Steven N. Cowan with second-degree reckless endangerment in the incident that made his wife worry that he would shoot her, according to a criminal complaint.

Cowan, 67, and his wife were in the living room Monday night, watching the dance competition program that has featured the daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin this season as one of the competitors.

As Bristol Palin danced on the screen, Cowan raged.

"The (expletive) politics," he yelled, according to the complaint. Cowan was upset that a political figure's daughter was on the show when he didn't consider her a good dancer, his wife told authorities.

I don't watch that dumb show for a lot of reasons. Her inclusion on it would pretty much make me ask a public place to turn it off (just like Faux). I agree with the remote idea.

18. I laughed at first, but actually, it's not funny at all.
Cowan went to his bedroom and came back about 20 minutes later, demanding that his wife find his pistols. Cowan's daughter had taken two handguns away for safety reasons, according to the complaint.

Cowan had tracked down a single-shot shotgun in the house, he "slapped" bullets down onto a TV tray, loaded a round and took out the TV, the complaint says.

Cowan's face was bright red. He loaded the gun again. His wife put a blanket over her head, thinking that if her husband decided to shoot at her, she didn't want to see it.

-------

Cowan's wife told authorities that he has been taking medication for bipolar disorder and that the family's finances have caused stress. He had been drinking at a bar before he came home, according to the complaint.

It is obvious that Bristol being in "Dancing With The Stars" was the least of his problems. The wife is lucky that he only shot the TV.

;(

27. I was going to suggest that there are medications for the guy's problem.
Bipolar patients often go off their meds. Or their meds stop being as effective--or never were as effective as hoped.

Alcohol? Bad mix.

No wonder they took away the pistols "for safety reasons."

BIL is bipolar. One of a minority of bipolar patients, he had a psychotic break a few years ago, never fully recovered.

32. Maybe he can't afford meds under Rethug owned Insurance companies
A few years down the line, a re-re-re born again Christian Senator Bristol Palin will once more help conservatives block health reform after it was killed off in 2011. Then, he won't have to gripe about her dancing anymore. Except to the tune of the Insurance lobbies.

36. Apparently he was taking medication.
Like you said, maybe he had a reaction due to the alcohol he consumed. Either way, the wife was fortunate that he took out his anger on the TV and not her.

Sorry about your BIL, I hope that he is doing well. A friend of mine is married to a bipolar man and he seems OK (he too takes medication). If she hadn't told me that he was bipolar, I would never have guessed it.

20. DWTS has enabled the automated teabagger robo voters....
Edited on Wed Nov-17-10 12:14 PM by hlthe2b
They learned how they can shape the media "spin" and public opinion by bastardizing online polls. Thus encouraged, they now do whatever it takes to defend their "nasty girl" Mama Grizzly Palin and her "little talentless cub." They have been targeting Brandy all season, given their scarcely veiled racist attitudes and Bristol delivered the "dog whistle" call to arms by accusing Brandy's partner Maks of being against her. I was heart-broken to see the look on Brandy's face. While I've never been an ardent fan of the show, they have absolutely destroyed it, in the name of ratings. That said, if Jennifer Gray does not deserve to win, given her superior dancing and hard work, I'll be damned. Even the Disney kid, Kyle, has delivered the entertainment value that justifies his being there. Palin, is simply a teabagger's proxy for the real target of their wet dreams. :puke:

I feel sorry for the guy who lost it and went over the edge. I certainly refuse to put that much emphasis on a damned tv show, but I do understand his sentiment.

25. Palin will win.
According to another site I that I read there are ways to game the system in that people can just flood ABC will e-votes. People create bogus e-mail addresses that aren't verified, and then spend hours doing nothing but that. That speaks volumes right there. Maybe next Monday they'll overload ABC's system and crash it. Poetic justice, that.

As I've said, I've really enjoyed DWTS until this year. It was neat to see people out of their comfort zones, trying something new, doing their best and having fun at it. Yeah, you had the occasional ringers, but for the most part some people started with 0 dance skills and ended up winners, Mirror Ball Trophy or not. This year was not about that at all, and I think it may kill the show, or drag it down for a long, long while. What began with Tom DeLay (an equally dislikeable person who left because of foot issues) was completed with Palin, and I have to wonder what in the world were the ABC brass thinking -- why, why bring polarizing politics into an **entertainment** show? Can we at least have SOME refuge from the bullshit that's going on? Of course I know why they did it. And they've ruined a perfectly good franchise. Damn...I hate being pissed week after week when I see hardworking, genuinely talented people going home while Palin stays. I especially feel for Jennifer Grey, because I too have a similar knee injury and it's taken me MONTHS to get back to something that vaguely resembles a trot when I jog. How she does it week after week is amazing, and is an eample of how once I looked forward to seeing the stars on this show.

Jennifer could channel Ginger Rogers, Agnes de Mille, and Pavlova next week and it won't make a tinker's damn worth of difference. Kyle? He could probably save himself a week's worth of rehearsals and stop wasting his time at this point.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. ABC, you got your publicity. Now go choke on it.

21. Man Shoots TV Over Bristol's 'Dancing' Routine
Source: TMZ.com

A SWAT team posted up outside a home in Wisconsin yesterday -- after a shotgun toting 67-year-old man blasted his TV because he was so enraged with Bristol Palin's performance on "Dancing with the Stars."

Local authorities claim Steven Cowan (left) told officers that he felt Palin was not a good dancer and that she was only on the show because of her famous mother.

Officials say Cowan was so pissed after Monday's show -- that he fired at his television set and then aimed the gun at his wife ... though she managed to escape the house.

30. Maybe he's a Brandy Norwood fan
Brandy and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were given the boot on last night's shocking elimination episode -- meaning Bristol, Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey will be in the finals.

...Brandy had a perfect score with one of her dances Monday and an overall score of 57/60. Bristol had a 53/60.
