Prep kicker back on football team after pink cleats flap
Source: USA Today

MENDENHALL, Miss. — Coy Sheppard will be back on the football field Friday night, but his pink cleats will stay home.
Sheppard, who was dismissed from the Mendenhall High School football team last month after wearing the brightly colored shoes for a game and practice, was reinstated Thursday during a meeting with school officials.

The 17-year-old placekicker, who also plays on the school's soccer team, filed a lawsuit against the school district last week to protest his dismissal from the team Oct. 11. The suit has been dropped as part of Thursday's agreement, said his attorney Oliver Diaz of Jackson.

Sheppard said he was surprised by the national attention the case has drawn. "I wasn't doing it for the attention on me," he said. "I really want to help people out."

Good for him! That coach still has issues though IMO.

1. Apparently the coach doesn't watch NFL games much.
Otherwise, he would have seen many instances of teams wearing various articles of pink clothing during the game. Or he was totally clueless.

2. Sorry but I side w/ the coach on this one
You are part of a team and you have to wear the uniform that the rest of the
team wears ...... and that includes your cleats. So not unless the coach gave
him permission to wear pink cleats he should not have the right to wear them.

5. Football is a meathead sport and it is coached a lot of times by meatheads ...
..... it has always been then way and it will always be that way. The coach may
be 100% wrong but he is still the coach and the coach gets to set the rules no
matter how petty and thoughtless his or her rules might be. If you are on the
team you have to do what the coach tells you do and if you don't like the rules
of a given coach you are free to quit.

If I was the coach of that team and the kid wanted to wear pink cleats to support
breast cancer i would have had no problem w/ it but since somebody else is the
coach he gets to play "mini God on Earth."

4. "He coaches the team real good," Sheppard said. "I'm glad to be back with him, playing for him."

"He coaches the team real good," Sheppard said. "I'm glad to be back with him, playing for him."

Really well.

I hope the coach isn't his English teacher.

Sheppard said his goal was to raise awareness about breast cancer. "As long as this raised awareness, then it's done some good," he said. "I'm just glad to be back on the team."

The shoes were a present from his 82-year-old great-grandmother, and he wore them in honor of his grandmother and step-grandmother — both cancer survivors, he said.

Coach does NOT coach the team "real good."

Coach is a dick.

7. Most football players shouldn't be allowed out of a classroom.
The lack of intelligence is stunning.

8. Maybe you should cut a 17 year old who is trying to raise awareness for breast cancer a break.
He was talking to reporters, not taking his English finals.

9. That's kind of insulting to Mississippi residents isn't it?
Count me in the "the student was part of the team" crowd. I've played sports and I've coached sports, no one individual should ever be doing anything to make himself stand out (that's why I hate certain pro sports now). Even if the kid was sincere about breast cancer awareness he should have gone to the coach first.

11. I'm so damn tired of the Breast Cancer nonsense in football.
It has to be one of the most useless campaigns ever. Why try to raise awareness about a disease that mostly affects women in a sport mostly watched by men?

Breast Cancer already receives much more funding than prostate cancer. The awareness has worked. It's worked too well, to the detriment of funding research into other more deadly diseases. Let's give it a rest.
