Thai official slain in ambush by alleged Islamic insurgents
Suspected Islamic insurgents shot and killed a local politician yesterday as Thailand's prime minister admitted his government has been unable to do anything to stop the escalating violence in the Muslim-dominated south.

Daoh Kareeuma, 56, an elected official of a village administration in Yala province, was ambushed by two gunmen as he arrived home after going round his village on a motorcycle, police Captain Jirasak Wichaicharoenying said.

The death raised to 59 the number of people killed this year in the almost daily cycle of violence gripping the southern provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, the only Muslim majority areas in the predominantly Buddhist country. The government says the culprits are Islamic separatists, who have targeted policemen, village officials and others belonging to the Buddhist majority.

Also yesterday, two gunmen shot and seriously injured the husband of a woman who works in a village administration office, said police lieutenant Ith Boonrith.

Is this incompetent reporting or bias reporting? There is no mention what lead to the information of 'alleged Islamic'.

8. Layman, I'm sorry that you take offense to my post.
It's not my intention to characterize ALL Muslims as terrorists.

But, you must admit that the trouble in the world today that we are all talking about is caused by Muslims.

Sure, there are drug runners and communist guerillas that are causing trouble here and there and maybe the Thai murderers belong to those groups.

But the fact that there have been murders in that area attributed to Muslim terrorists in the past, accompanied with the fact that the present atrocity conforms to the methods of past atrocities would lead most reasonable people to assign responsiblity to the Muslim terrorists.

If - on further examination it is shown that Muslims had nothing to do with this atrocity, then I will abjectly apologize.

9. Layman, I would like to conduct a civilized conversation wth you
about the Muslim religion and it's relation to other cultures. I have a little experience with the subject.

My wife is from Nigeria, I spent a few years working in that country. Since I don't have the credentials to move to New Zealand, Nigeria is my second choice for Bush refuge.

But, wifey and I are both concerned about the troubles that the Muslims of Nigeria are causing for the entire country.

On the other hand, our best friends are American blacks who have converted to Islam.

Now, how can you ask the moderators to censure me for speaking truth? Islam has problems and they must be addressed before the entire world erupts in war.

12. Did you read the headline?
LBN rules require the use of the actual headline of news article. Interesting, headlines are generated by the editor, not the reporter and can often skew the bias of a news item.

You know, there's no where in the world (except maybe iceland and nz!) that's safe from terrorism.

I'm planning to go to Southern Thailand and Malaysia next year, and I can just hear my dad freaking out right now.

I've been to the Buddhist areas, but my favorite areas of Thailand are in the Muslim south. Such beautiful scenery, especially in the Krabi province.

6. Well, they attacked us here, too, of course.
There's no reason to stay home. Then we've allowed the terrorists to control our lives, just like they wanted to do in the first place, too.

11. Re: Developing US role in Thailand's South
There's more coming in now on a wider war in and around Yala. Such conflict would have been unheard-of just three years back. The CPM (Communist Party of Malaysia) had been totally disbanded since 1987.

Re: Bangkok Post - 4/3/04 - Headline Story - Violence In The South
Chetta: US giving limited assistance
World terrorist links with unrest admitted
by Wassana Nanuam:

<http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/03Apr2004_news05.php>

"Overseas assistance was necessary as there were links between the southern unrest and some international terrorist movements including Jaemah Islamiyah, said General Chetta who discussed the assistance with US ambassador Darryl Johnson last week.

The US was far more experienced in fighting terrorism than Thailand which was not a direct target of international terrorists, the minister said adding that he expected the US assistance would help improve the situation in the deep South."

I suppose will see if that's possible, but the situation is anything but normal, when normal is all people really want.
