ABC: Nancy Pelosi Seriously Considers Staying as Democratic Leader
Source: ABC News

In the wake of Tuesday's shellacking, outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, has been widely expected to step down as the Democratic leader and leave Congress.

Not so fast.

High-level Democratic sources in the House tell ABC News Pelosi is seriously considering staying in Congress and running for the position of minority leader.

Pelosi is methodically calling every Democratic House member who won on Tuesday, as well as many who lost, sources tell ABC News. In the process, she is weighing her options and gauging her support.

Some of Pelosi's closest allies are encouraging her to stay and to lead the Democratic effort to win back their majority. Those encouraging her are arguing, in part, that she can unify the progressives in the caucus, and more importantly, that nobody in the House can raise money for the next campaign better than Pelosi.

Mixed feelings, but lean towards "this is good." She has been one of the most effective speakers in history, and is an extremely good floor leader. The only downside is that she has been demonized by Republicans and may be a drag in swing districts, but any Democratic leader will probably be subjected to the same scorn. (More in her case because she's a successful, liberal WOMAN.)

2. I certainly hope so. On Andrea Mitchell today she and a guest said that it's
almost become a tradition for the losing Speaker to retire after a loss. I hope Nancy says, fuck that - I've still got some more butt to kick!

11. Andrea Mitchell is not credible.
If only it was tradition for someone in Mitchell's position to retire or disappear totally from the face of the earth.

7. look around... people don't care
some do, but too many in this party have lowered that bar soooo low, that I don't think anything could change unless we get somebody in there that would and could do the things you mentioned.

BTW - I agree with you.

16. Nope, which is why I lean in favor
I'd be more inclined to go with "fresh start" if their were anybody else in the House with the cojones and strategic skills Pelosi has. There aren't.

I think Pelosi should stay. The alternative will be someone more conservative and we don't need that.

29. If I had a vote, it would be stay. She got it done when no one else could have.
She was a lot more intelligent then I first thought when we won the House majority in 2006. She got all those blue dogs to vote for HCR. She kept the House together all the time. Who else is there in the House with that kind of leadership? If she goes, Hoyer comes in and he is just so blah. Repubs would demonize anyone in the minority leader position.

32. Pugs want that too.
They spent the fall chanting "Reid and Pelosi" like an imprecation.

Plus: the lady understands how to get things done.

Minus: on her watch, the House has been lost to the Visigoths.
