Michigan Congressman-Elect Says Obama Has To Follow Republican Mandate, Or Government Shuts Down
Source: Alan Colmes/Liberaland

Michigan Congressman-elect Tim Walbert, who lost his seat two years ago but won it back on Tuesday, says if the president doesn’t follow along with the Republican mandate, it will result in a government shut-down.

He said Republicans can work together to get things done with the Obama administration, but that will be up to the president.

If Obama, like then-President Bill Clinton did after the 1994 midterms, responds to the mandate from voters and understands he can’t disregard it, then he thinks Obama will do well.

“If he doesn’t, he will shut government down,” Walberg said.

IF the Republicans want to "SHUT DOWN" the United States government, let them. What ever happens will be on their heads and hands. And if the People of The United States show up with Pitchforks, they best be ready to have more blood shed on their hands. I am tired of their bullying, either PUT UP OR STFU!

Isn't this what the fat man on radio is always proposing? Hasn't he more than once advocated the benefits of a govt not doing anything? Obama should take them up on this and let the govt shut down and show the people what they got for their vote and make sure the listeners of the fat man on radio are reminded what they listen too.

24. Uh, shut it down means millions of older folks don't get food or heat,
millions of disabled people will suffer the same fate, families too. All the federal money that keeps teachers, police, fire on the job - gone.

Those with decent jobs, such as millionaires in congress or clever little moneychangers on Wall Street can ride it out for as long as it takes.

So this whole "I dare you" posture could bring a great deal of pain and tragedy to a lot of vulnerable people.

Given the precarious state of our economy it could bring things to a state which might be hard to recover from.

Maybe a better response would be "How about you try not to destroy our country, you selfish son-of-a-bitch?"

I don't mean to say that "shut it down" it is not an appropriate response, but there are lots of costs we will not see...

Give in to everything the Republicans want? If they say they'll destroy the country unless Obama obliterates SS, Medicare, the minimum wage act, and anything else "progressive" would you be OK with that? Yeah, you bet they could go that far if they really wanted to.

Sorry, blackmail isn't acceptable and Republicans need to be bitch-slapped back to reality.

Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 11:08 AM by jtuck004
And if Obama would use his bully pulpit effectively, he could make them out to be the worst traitors to this country
we have ever seen. So to say that "caving" is our only choice is a false premise.

And the alternative was using the power the voters gave us in the first two years, and not wasting it responding to the
framing of a bunch of selfish children. Oops, missed that bus.

But it doesn't mean he (and anyone else who really cares about the country) couldn't start fighting for the
largest jobs program since the WPA.

26. Past is prologue
Remember going through this before along with the impeachment and
trial? Congress so weakened and demoralized the administration to
the point effective use of our intelligence and ability to retaliate
against threats was jeopardized. Certain elements of terror organizations
recognized those weaknesses and mounted an attack on our commerce and
took the lives of over 3,000 people in the process. So Congressman Walberg,
Boehner and Senator McConnel keep up the partisan attacks on this President.
Your political ambitions will only send another message to those terrorist
elements that we are divided, weak and unable to respond to any threats or
attacks they may bring upon our soil again. But you will be in a position
to elect a Republican president in 2012, if indeed there is a nation left.

28. "Work together"?
I don't recall the Republicans "responding" to and not "disregarding" the 2008 mandate from voters in such an acquiescent manner.

And really -- what's the difference here between "work with us or we shut down the government" and "do what we want or we shut down the government"? I suspect they really have the latter message in mind, considering they didn't lift a finger to work with Dems when they were in the minority; why would they suddenly be interested in bipartisanship when they are in the majority?

Bingo. And back when Clinton first was elected president and the Democrats held the House and Senate, the Bob Dole more or less declared there would be no honeymoon for the new president. And the media wasn't much better; they were running headlines such as Just Another Failed Presidency? by the spring of '93. We've seen this movie before.

Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 10:05 PM by UrbScotty
He beat a Republican congressman in the 2006 primary, and won the general election because Dems hadn't fielded a strong candidate since the guy everyone thought was going to be the Republican nominee (the incumbent) was a well-liked moderate.

In 2008, state Senate Dem Leader Mark Schauer ran against Walberg, and beat him. This Tuesday, Walberg won the rematch.
