Obama Open to Discussing Tax Cut Extension For All

President Barack Obama is open to the idea of discussing an extension of Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels, the White House said on Thursday.

Two days after congressional elections, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs signalled that Obama might consider a compromise with Republicans that would keep tax breaks not only for the middle-class but for wealthier Americans as well.

47. really? You really think he is that dumb?
he didnt get in the white house by being stupid. He didnt get healthcare reform passed by being stupid. '

Like I said about 26 months ago, this black kid growing up in KS for a bit definitely got his ass kicked for being black. He is in fact tough, and he is in fact smart. Sure Im open to extending your rich persons tax cuts....but Im going to need a few things first. If I can think of it. He sure will.

Edited on Thu Nov-04-10 11:06 AM by niceypoo
'Healthcare' reform is a perfect example of this naivete. At every iteration, more and more was stripped from the bill while 'every republican idea' was added to it. What did Obama get in return? Nothing.

The republicans will NOT compromise with Obama. He will get burned again if he does. How many times does Lucy have to pull the ball away before Charlie Brown figures it out?

111. He might just be that dumb
Maybe he's not totally to blame, the rest of the congressional democrats helped him along. Healthcare reform was modeled to provide additional money to insurance companies. Democratic politicians probably thought they'd help them get re-elected. They didn't and they won't. Over and over on issue after issue, Democrats opened by giving the Republicans what they thought they'd want, and thereby surrendered the position that was best for the 95% or 98% of people that don't own half this country. That was stupid. Then because the Democratic politicians wanted so damn bad to get SOME kind of healthcare reform (or other pet issue) through congress, they spent months giving in to demand after demand from two or three Republicans who just might get on board the bus if they could just lower that step down close enough to the ground. In light of everything, I think it absolutely fair to say that Democratic politicians are generally a bunch of absolute morons.

The whole purpose of the "tax cuts", was to transfer more public revenue to the elites. President Obama is a product of the political power establishment, and can never represent anything other than the status quo. Otherwise, he would have never received the funding necessary to winning a national election in the United States.

34. Let's take a page from the marketing dept of Wall mart and tell
the very rich that if they want to do business in our American Market they need to pay our price which is the same as it was under Clinton. If they want the profit that a huge consumer base gives them, they can not pass it up. They should pay what we want.We have the upper hand we do not have to sell cheap.

They will not go away. They want our market.

It's our economy. We do not have to bend over and take it. We have the right to set the rules so that we profit. They cannot give up on the bargain to prosper in the US. They play - they pay.

Someone wake me when this nightmare is over.

They should introduce middle-class tax cut relief in the lame duck and force Republicans to vote against it. If Republicants refuse to pass middle-class tax cuts without the additional tax cuts to people WHO DON'T NEED THEM, then let them all expire and make sure the public is aware that Republicants, once again, voted against the poor and middle class.

A few days ago he said tax over $250,000 is necessary to bring down deficit; now it's ok to cut above.
Will he cave on social security next, and raise age limit to 70, gut medicare and medicaid.
If the economy becomes a disaster down the road because of these tax cuts Dems will get the blame.

59. Give it a few minutes and watch the story change
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Thursday morning that President Obama was indicating a willingness to listen to Republican arguments for extending the tax cuts when he spoke Wednesday.

During the post-election presidential press conference Wednesday, the president was asked if he was willing to negotiate on an extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, which was a key talking point for Republicans on the campaign trail. Obama said "absolutely."

Gibbs said that Obama "does not believe" extending those tax cuts is a good idea, but he is "open" to talking to Republicans about it.

The president will get his first chance to listen to arguments on the subject on Nov. 18, when he will host both Republican and Democratic congressional leaders at the White House for a meeting and a dinner.

During the midterm campaign, Obama repeatedly bashed the GOP for wanting to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich. The president has advocated only extending the tax cuts for families making $250,000 a year and less.

The president, as part of his argument, said the country could not afford $700 billion in tax cuts, and the U.S. would have to borrow the money from China or Saudi Arabia.

link

The media has been pulling this crap a lot lately, the headlines don't match the story: "Obama moves toward GOP on tax cuts"

Listening to their pitch is not moving toward their position.

It sounds more like just giving the Republicans what they want, with no compromise on their part.

What's the point of having a Senate and a President if the one chamber of one branch of government that the Repugs (will) control is going to dictate policy?

And it's going to be hard to run for re-election with a white flag as his logo.

A compromise is when you get something from the other side in return for anything you give. You do not "compromise" by caving to their demands in advance.

106. This is gonna be a tough 2 years...
I think the President and the WH need to SLOW DOWN on their responses and THINK a little longer about how this is all going to work out. The republicans will give him (and the American people) nothing in the way of compromises - and he wii continually move to their middle, to thier agenda.

Well the more this goes on the more and more I am going to look away from the Democratic party for the ideals that I want to see our country embrace. If the Tea Party can do it - than the Progressives can too -
I say we start now to mobilize and excite people about true democratic progressives - and if they are not in the Democratic party, then so be it...

they won't even have to do the SocSec cuts before January (as St. Nancy seems to have promised); they can just have the Republicans do it and thus "launder" the policy so nobody can blame the Dems without being called a Rove plant (well, not more than usually)

we don't need a third party, we need a second one

Reid must do everything possible to send Obama a good bill.
If Obama signs a bill extending tax cuts for all, then the
progressives will stay home in 2012. If he vetoes the bill,
then the middle class will vote republican in droves. Either
way, we'll have President Palin with a Senate super-majority.
