Tea party's Rand Paul wins Senate seat in Kentucky
Edited on Tue Nov-02-10 06:52 PM by onehandle
Source: AP

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Republican Rand Paul tapped into tea party support to rise from obscurity to win election to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Jack Conway in a nasty race that drew attention for a skirmish and hard-hitting ads.

Paul, 47, a Bowling Green eye doctor, was an early tea party enthusiast who attracted conservative support for his condemnation of budget deficits, the economic stimulus and the health care overhaul. The first-time candidate often overlooked Conway to turn the race into a midterm review of President Barack Obama.

An Associated Press analysis of exit poll data showed Paul defeating Conway. With 20 percent of precincts reporting, Paul was leading Conway 55 percent to 45 percent.

Paul was a first-time candidate with a strong political pedigree: His father is maverick Texas congressman and unsuccessful 2008 GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Republican nominee for President in 2012, and that his particular neurotic affect may be more powerful at that point than we like to imagine.

Remember, he hates the Patriot Act, opposed the Iraq War, hates neo-cons, and didn't vote for Bush or McCain. He's no liberal, but seems better than a Bush neo-con.

31. Yeah, but he's also anti-choice even in cases of rape and incest.
He wants to get rid of the Department of Education, repeal the 14th Amendment, and supports unlimited direct campaign donations from individuals and corporations.

Not to mention that he doesn't believe the federal government should worry about racial segregation.

There may be some common ground, but the rest of his acreage is Loony World.

He hates the Patriot Act, Iraq War, and neo-cons only because he doesn't want federal government spending a dime on ANYthing, even war or empire building. He no doubt hates OASDI and Medicare, too.

As far his not voting for Bush and McCain, he sure did not vote Democratic, either. Did he vote for someone even dumber and nuttier than Dummya and McNuts? Or didn't he vote at all?

Btw, how do you know his vote? You take that nutter at his word? Hell, if I voted for Dummya and McNuts, I would deny it.Did he vote for someone even nuttier and dumber than Bush and McCain? Or didn't he vote at all?

Take a mighty selective presentation of facts to make Paul seem like a kissin' cousin of us Dems, Ter, but I don't think any here will buy it.

23. yeah, and child labor is just fine
and any business can boot anyone who they don't like, that includes the color of your skin. I wonder if Paul has read any history of the struggle in Kentucky with the miners. How many died--how about the robber barons? And, how can Kentuckians vote for a man who is against their struggles--oh yeah, they're all going to be rich one day.

This country, those who do not learn from history--we've been in the "gilded age" part II, and the robber barons are winning the global front. You can kiss this country good-bye. Too bad, no one told the teabaggers that robber barons are global now and they could care less what happens in this country, as long as the money keeps rolling in.

And, if all of the teabagging, nut jobs win, is there another country we may find where sanity reigns? Because, Studs Terkel may have had faith in the American people, but I'm leaning to the side of too many people who have crossed over to the mammon, "screw your neighbor" stupid side.

Oh dear God. If Rand Paul can get elected, we are really doomed. This is it. The end of all that was ever good, tolerant or wholesome about this country has come to an end. The only hope is that the capitalist system, which is itself so corrosive, will squelch the vitriol of this idealoge.

WASHINGTON – Anti-tax crusader Rand Paul's election victory Tuesday gave the tea party a flag bearer to send to the Senate and hope that more like-minded Washington outsiders would be elected to Congress.

The first-time candidate and champion of small government upended the Kentucky Senate race by trouncing the Republican establishment's hand-picked candidate in the May primary and then winning decisively against Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway on Tuesday.

Candidates with tea party support were on the ballot in more than 70 House districts, seven races for Senate and three for governor. Paul, an ophthalmologist and son of libertarian hero Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, was elected to a seat currently held by a Republican, so the win did not contribute to GOP hopes for gains in the Senate. He will replace Republican Sen. Jim Bunning, who is retiring.
