CNNWashington (CNN) – White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs just wrapped up his morning gaggle with reporters on Tuesday where he announced that the administration is close to lifting the moratorium on off shore oil drilling.
Gibbs said there have been meetings and discussions in the last few days within the administration and he believes that the White House is "getting close to having in place something that will allow us to lift that moratorium."
When asked if he thought a decision would come within the week Gibbs responded "I do, pretty soon."
He did emphasize that the administration wants to ensure that when the moratorium is lifted a process will be put in place "in which the entities that hold permits to drill exploratory wells will have to meet a containment and worst case scenario that ensure that we in the government have confidence" that companies will be able to respond to a "catastrophe."
